Rifle conversion question

Has anyone taken a shot-out barrel and bored it out to a larger caliber? Is this even possible/practical? I have a rem700 with factory barrel nearing the end of its barrel career. I am wondering if I can make it into a 6mmbr or if I would need to buy a new barrel to do that?

Chambers can be recut to a different cartridge if the barrel has a large enough shank diameter to take the threads that must also be recut, when the barrel is setback. Some barrels, like a Remington varmint contour have a step-down in front of the chamber that precludes much, if any setback. One of the reasons a heavy varmint, straight taper contour is popular: it can be setback & rechambered, one or more times.

Trying to change the bore diameter to something larger ( 22 cal to 6mm for example), would be more expensive than having a new premium barrel blank chambered. The degree of accuracy would also be an unknown if attempting to change the bore diameter.

A barrel on a antique rifle that is shot out, or is now an obsolete chambering/caliber could be bored out with a liner inserted to keep it usable, but again, cost would be a consideration, as would be the depreciation in value if it were kept all original. With a liner insert, it could be converted into any caliber.

When a barrel is no longer usable, the simplest "fix" is to replace it, and if one is concerned with the most possible accuracy, they will choose one of the premium hand lapped barrels like Krieger, Bartlein, Shilen, etc. If they are looking for "hunting" type accuracy then a less costly barrel can be chosen.

many gunsmiths have take off bbl that they have removed from 700 action and put custom bbls on.

if you advertise or call some of those listed on the web sight you will find one- they usually will cost $50-75 and most of the time are new or have had very little use..

i know for a fact the R. W. Hart of Nescopeck pa has some and they could install for you - or sell to you.
