Returning to reloading

Hello everyone. I am in the process of getting set up to start reloading again. I got into it back in the late seventies/early eighties and my priorities changed ( marriage and kids ) but no regrets. I am now retired and have some time to do what I want to do instead of what I have to do. So, I am going to start reloading again. I found this forum and joined in hopes of blowing the cobwebs out of my head and seeing what has transpired since back in the day. One big plus is the internet. It sure makes researching a lot easier. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. I will be lurking for awhile to get the feel of things and maybe post a question here and there when needed. Thanks and take care.

Welcome to you! The guys here are a GREAT bunch... There is a wealth of valuable information here just for the asking! Remember, the only BAD question, is the one you did not ask!

Thanks for the welcome ShootDots. Hey, What's up with the verification captcha and questions. I have never seen that in a forum before?

That seems to cease after awhile. Welcome and for Gods sake ask some questions. We love to help.

I don't know what you are referring to "verification captcha"?

Thanks jonbearman. I thought it may have something to do with a post count. I don't hesitate to ask a question when one is needed. I have powder, primers and brass but will not be able to get a press and some bullets until next month. I am sure after that the questions will begin. In the meantime I am reading as much as possible on the subject. It has been a while and I am basically starting over.

I have to answer some questions before I can post. I may have to have a certain amount of posts or a moderator may have to conform my account before they are removed. No big deal.

Welcome , I have a similar story as yours, reloaded in the eighties and then a hiatus and now back again. You're going to like learning about all the new methods, things and gadgets. You're really going to like the wealth of good advice and info this site will bring to you. Good luck with your renewed hobby.

Welcome :) These guys are probably the most knowledgeable shooters you'll ever find on the Internet. TONS of experience from some of the best competition and recreation shooters in the world.

What's the hold up on your reloading press if I may ask? Out of stock or something? If so, I'm sure we could get you one. And finally, what type handloading are you going for? Competition or Recreation/hunting?

Welcome to Accurate Shooter. The learning never stops here. Have you considered asking what press others like before purchasing? I always buy two or three times before I get what I should have purchased in the first place! That get expensive for retired people like you and I. Tell us about your firearms and your reloading/shooting goals. Hunting, formal competition, etc. You are at the best spot on the www right here!

Welcome...the biggest change over the years is for the better and it surely is this site. The ability to ask a question or run a thought past this group produces a vast amount of knowledgeable answers. If this existed in the 60's I would have a nice stockpile of bullets and powders left that were used in search of good performers.
If you do indeed find the site to your liking and benefit you might consider a contribution in the future.

Big welcome also pt....the guys here are all awesome as you are already seeing I'm sure.

Dots...not to be critical at all but the way I heard that saying is "the only dumb question is the one not asked" meaning dumb as in not said....or something like that anyway.
Take care

The Captcha thing is really common these days (and annoying!) but serves to stop web-crawlers from implanting spam. More than one forum's been killed by spammers the past few years....

The questions thing gives established members (and Admins) a chance to learn more about what your level of knowledge is, and maybe why you want to be counted among the members here.

So after all that I have to say welcome, friend!

(And I'll add the only stupid questions are those you already know the answers to.

Pastime,

glad you are here,
biggest change you will see is the availability of info, help, and just fun banter, found only at the range or gun store in years past.

that press you miss, hump, there is some good stuff out there today, used as well as new. check around.
as far as components, well hope you still have some, they are scarce today in this political environment.

the powders have changes a lot, names same manufacturers different, and lots of new powder options.
bullets amazing, what is out there, if you cast, then that is even advanced greatly in the last 25 years.

welcome and have fun.

Bob

Your story sounds like mine, Pastime. I got out of it about 30 years ago and am just now getting back into it, with a lot of help from the people here. Welcome back to the addiction!

Thanks all. I used a Lyman Turret press in days gone buy. I loaded handgun cartridges in 9mm, 38 spcl. and 357 mag using Dupont 231 powder. I shoot/practice for home and personal defense and fun and I do a little hunting. Now days it is mostly for squirrels with a Marlin model 60. I am planning on purchasing a Lee Classic Turret press kit to start out with. I will be starting out loading .45 ACP for my Ruger SR45 and then adding 7.62x39 for my Ruger Mini 30. I purchased a couple of pounds of IMR 4756 powder and some CCI #300 primers this month. I would prefer to use Winchester 231 or HP38 but it seems a little scarce at the moment as do many others. Next month I will be picking up the press, .45 carbide 4 die set and bullets. Probably lead 45 230gr RN. So, I will get there in time.

I have that LEE classic turret press as well. It works very good for the type of shooting you intend to do. I use it for handgun and AR-15 rifle rounds (556 and 6.8spc). Makes surprisingly accurate ammo. For the price point, it is worth every penny. Just make sure you buy a separate 4 hole turret for each caliber so you can swap them out quickly and easily. The Lyman charging die to mount a powder measure on your turrets is a must as well. Good luck! Let us know if you need any help or tips setting it up :)
