Reticle Illumination Control Placement

On a lot of older rifles scopes with battery powered reticle illumination, the control & battery is on the ocular. You still find this on some scopes today. My question is, are there any mechanical , reliability or performance advantage to side vs ocular illuminated controls?

I think it's a matter of preference. I don't mind it at either place. What I do like is my Swarovski has orange instead of red, it seems to be much easier on the eyes and doesn't wash out the target as bad. It is on the ocular and very easy to turn on or adjust. It also goes from barely visable to bright. I like it better then the ones on the side and red in color. Matt

As I see it, the main reason to move the control off of the eyepiece is to get it out of the way of the shooter's view of the dials.
