Results w/Nosler 80 gr BT's in my 6BR

I wanted to try some Nosler 80 gr BT's in my 6BR that I plan on using for varmint/coyote/deer hunting so I did some 100 yard testing with 29.0 gr thru 30.0 gr of Varget seated .020 off the lands and found the 29.6 gr - 29.8 gr of Varget to hold the best vertical @ 100 yards. The gun is a Savage 4.27" SA centerfeed with a Rifle Basix trigger set @ 18 oz. bedded into a B&C Medalist Tactical stock with a 26" Shilen heavy varmint 1-8 twist bbl topped off with a 24X40 Weaver T-series scope. I bought the gun (but I switched barrels) and the scope from other members here recently. Here's how she looks........

Here's one of the targets I was testing with last week.........

So tonight I got to go out and see how well it performed at longer distances. Here's a 3 shot group @ 200 yds.......

and a 3 shot group @ 400 yards...........

and finally some shots @ 600 yards, the low group of 3 shots was first, then I adjusted up 1/2 MOA trying to get a couple bullseye hits, which I did but I should have adjusted 1/4 MOA to the right as well...........

So it seems this load @ 29.8 gr of Varget running about 2925-2940 FPS seated .020 off the lands is performing quite well. All my shooting was out of the back of my P/U shooting prone off of my shooting mat using the Caldwell bipod and a rear bag as I wanted to see how it performed under conditions I might expect while hunting. I honestly didn't think I'd get under 1/2 MOA performance shooting with a bipod so you can say I'm extremely pleased with the results I'm getting. :D

When testing at any range you should be looking for the best vertical and not horizontal. Is that what you meant?

Yes, I guess I did mix up my thought process/wording there.

It still amazes me how just .2 gr effects the vertical dispersion. I didn't show the pics but the loads @ 29.2 gr and 29.4 gr were jumping around vertically but the loads I tested @ 29.6 gr and 29.8 gr settled down nicely vertically and went back to jumping around again @ 30.0 gr.

I own 4 6MM BR's, all used for short range (100-300 yard) shooting. In my experience .1 g sometimes make a difference in verticle combine that with different seating depth to fine tune your load.

You might go on up in powder charge .3 gr at a time. When you get in the higher node you might like it even better. My savage 6br really tightened up with the 80gr bullets at 32 gr Varget

I guess I may have to try some testing up to that range. Those bullets must really be smoking with 32 gr of Varget!

Mine too. Berger 88's are great in my Cooper with Varget, but 80's with H322 are even better. Cloverleafs all touching are the rule at 100.

IF you get a chance try some 80gr Berger's my 6BR loves them

+1
My 6BR 8-twist LOVES the Berger 80 grain Varmint Match bullets with about 27 grains of 8208-XBR and CCI 450 primers. I use a Harrel's measure so I use clicks and find that my 6BR shoots 45 1/2 clicks up to 48 clicks about the same. Seating depth isn't really that sensitive either with 10-thou jammed to 20-thou jump. Now, if I could just learn to read the wind better! :o

I went to the range today to sight in a 22-250 I'll be using as my coyote field gun and had my 6BR with me and decided to shoot a couple groups with it and I ended up shooting the best 5-shot group I've ever shot.

It was hot today and according to my chrono the speeds were up a little over previous testing I've done with this rifle and this load, a few were just over 3000 fps, I suppose that's due to the heat. All in all the speeds were about 40-50fps faster than I had previously experienced with this load but I've never shot them in 90 degree heat either.

Anyway..........here's the 5 shot group I got @ 100 yards today. It measured just under 1/4".
