I wanted to try some Nosler 80 gr BT's in my 6BR that I plan on using for varmint/coyote/deer hunting so I did some 100 yard testing with 29.0 gr thru 30.0 gr of Varget seated .020 off the lands and found the 29.6 gr - 29.8 gr of Varget to hold the best vertical @ 100 yards. The gun is a Savage 4.27" SA centerfeed with a Rifle Basix trigger set @ 18 oz. bedded into a B&C Medalist Tactical stock with a 26" Shilen heavy varmint 1-8 twist bbl topped off with a 24X40 Weaver T-series scope. I bought the gun (but I switched barrels) and the scope from other members here recently. Here's how she looks........
Here's one of the targets I was testing with last week.........
So tonight I got to go out and see how well it performed at longer distances. Here's a 3 shot group @ 200 yds.......
and a 3 shot group @ 400 yards...........
and finally some shots @ 600 yards, the low group of 3 shots was first, then I adjusted up 1/2 MOA trying to get a couple bullseye hits, which I did but I should have adjusted 1/4 MOA to the right as well...........
So it seems this load @ 29.8 gr of Varget running about 2925-2940 FPS seated .020 off the lands is performing quite well. All my shooting was out of the back of my P/U shooting prone off of my shooting mat using the Caldwell bipod and a rear bag as I wanted to see how it performed under conditions I might expect while hunting. I honestly didn't think I'd get under 1/2 MOA performance shooting with a bipod so you can say I'm extremely pleased with the results I'm getting.
