Rests?

I am looking at purchasing a rest to shoot from. With so many options out there I really have no idea what to buy or what to look for. The SEB rest looks really nice as does the one from farley, hart, and the one bruce baer make (although he has never returned any of my emails).

So my question for you guys is what am I looking for in a rest and which models should I be looking at? are the 700-1000 dollar rests really worth the money?

Depends on the type of shooting you do. If you have only factory rifles, a $600 rest won't reduce your group size, as compared to a Hart style pedestal rest with properly fitted Protektor bags that match your stock.

I suggest you try one out before you flop out the cash. The quality of the rests mention are excellent, but you may decide that type of articulation doesn't suit your fancy.
Maybe you can adapt to it. I know the guys I've seen using them are flat awsome with them. I haven't got used to a joy stick. I want to cause they look and feel cool, but,......
I'll stick with the ole lead screw for now. My problem may stem from video gaming. (still a kid at heart).
Can someone answer if you can invert direction polarity with the sticks, ie instead of up for up, down for up?

As i havent used either style, I don't think it will matter which style I choose as both will be new to me and will take some getting used to! What I really want to know is what features I need to look for, range of movement etc...

Do what I did, go to a match and inspect some of the stuff people are using and ask questions about it. Most guys are very helpful. If you are only recreational, a Caldwell may suit you just as well as a top name. I use a Caldwell RockBR as that works well for my needs. I also have a Hart Comp 2, but I still use the Caldwell for some reason.

As for what features you need, it will depend greatly on what kind of shooting you do. A varmint hunter will probably use a different rest that a 1000yd bench guy.

I recently bought a Joe Cowan rest from a forum member (Thanks Scott) and cut my group size easily by half, before that I was just using sand bags. I think any type of rest with anybodys budget will improve there shooting.

Thanks Butch, that's good to know.
I like that top cause it's light and I can make a bottom out of what ever I want, plastic or alum. to keep it light.

Butch is being modest but he makes the best joystick top I have ever used. go to http://shadetreeea.com/restTops.html

It will fit on a bunch of different bases if you already have something. It doesn't move when actually firing the shot like some joysitcks do.

it has been stated already, you need to know how your brain is wired- in other words which way you want to move the x hair when you move the handle or steer the joy stick before you get one. you will never be happy if you get the wrong one. personally i could never adapt to backwards. butch will not steer you wrong.

That rest JDJones listed is just awesome. Looks very well built and extremely well designed. Probably better than anything else you will find for that price. If I had the cash it would be SOLD!

Just to make sure everybody knows , I'm not "the" JD Jones of SSK rifles , jst happens to be my first two initials also and diden't relize the connection till some folks asked.

Just wanted to clarify
