Resizing die

My Redding F/L bushing die seems to resize my 7 SAUM brass too much. About .0045"-.005" at the body shoulder junction and about .002" at the .200" mark. Has anyone else had this issue using these dies and Norma 7 SAUM brass? I ordered a F/L bushing die from Whidden yesterday to try and see if it will resize less. If not then the next step is to send Whidden some fired cases and have a custom die made.

I have two Redding FL sizer dies for 22BR that seem wildly different in the amount of sizing they provide.

The fact is that with tapered case body, angled case shoulder, and a couple inches case length, that a very minute difference in tolerances can make a substantial difference in how the case fits the chamber. jd

Well I guess I'll know for comparison, Redding verse Whidden, which will resize less. I'm wondering if it's possible to take a fired case and modify by drilling and tapping the base to accept a threaded rod so as to chuck it in a drill. Then adding some lapping compound on to the case with the attempt to open the sizer die up a .001" or so. I know that the die is hardened but it might work? I'll wait to see if the Whidden resizes less first before I get nuts with the Redding.

You sound fairly experienced, but a simple problem of oversizing is too much lubrication on the case. Using Imperial Sizing Wax with my index finger just wiping the tin and using that and my thumb to coat the neck, shoulder and about 1/3 to 1/2of the body, I can usually size my cases .002 with pretty good consistency once my die is set up. If I heavy lube case it may size as much as .005 or more with the same die setup and ram pressure. I used to use spray lube and found that variation was too common and went to ISW and will use nothing else.

jepp2..This is exactly what needs to be done....worked well with my Whidden dies.
They really work well when your standard die does not cut it....
I sent Whidden my fired brass and now never size more than .002 or less even.

That's pretty much my same technique that I use with the Imperial wax. Just applying very thin with my fingers. This particular die takes a little more concentration on applying a very thin and complete coat towards the .200 line than normal. If not coated completely, but still very thin, the case sticks very hard inside the die.

John has a good video on setting up your die. At the 3:00 minute mark he covers raising it 1/4 turn above contacting the shell holder as a starting point.

Yes I understand this video and that's how I proceed in achieving my .002"-.0025" shoulder bump .

BTW, I use nothing but Whidden dies, some of the best IMHO. You won’t be sorry you invested in them.

I was not disappointed at all. In fact I was VERY happy when I sized my Norma 7 SAUM brass with the Whidden F/L bushing die. After setting up the die to achieve the .0025" shoulder bump I measured the brass at the body shoulder junction and .200" mark. First let me say that I knew after 1 piece of brass being sized with much less force going in and out that this die was definitely an improvement over the Redding die that took a lot of force to size a piece of brass. Once again I'm not knocking Redding dies, I have a lot of them, but in this instance the Whidden sizer die for MY 7 SAUM was clearly better. My measurement after sizing was only .00125"-.0015" smaller than a fired case at the body shoulder junction and only .0005"-.00075" smaller at the .200" mark. These measurements of the sized case using the Whidden F/L bushing die are perfect for my chamber. I don't think that I could have had a custom die made that would preform better that this regular 7 SAUM sizing die from Whidden. I even called Whidden's service department to inform them of how happy I am with their product and thank them. I'm not saying that this will be the same for everyone but, if you have a rifle chambered in 7 SAUM and your Redding dies are working your brass WAY TOO much I would suggest you give Whidden a try.

If hes got it set up to bump where he wants it, raising the die will do no good. Die instructions are pretty useless if youre trying to hit a certain shoulder bump. Ive yet to see a die touch the shellholder and be right.
