Resized brass

I am thinking of putting together either a 17 Fireball or a 17 Remington but have found brass for these is hard to find. So I was thinking of resizing brass myself until I came across a company that does this service. Has anyone dealt with High Plains Brass? They use once fired 5.56 brass to form these cases. Has anyone used there products and what can you tell me about the quality of there workmanship?

I really enjoy shooting my 221 Fireball and was thinking of trying some of there brass for that as well. Thanks in advance for all your comments.

Neither of the cases you mentioned are impossible to find, but the 17 rem brass is probably easiest to find by far. Building fireball repeater isn't near as easy as building the 17 rem on a "normal" action.

Yes, what parts are you using? The bolt is set up different on the .17 Fireball than from a standard .223. With that cartridge and certain bullets, repeaters can be problematic. Aside that, I'd go with zero freebore.

I run Highplains 17 rem reformed brass in my Ar in the winter, don't care if I lose some in the snow. Takes a couple firings to reach factory 17 rem length and powder capacity is lower. Through the Shilen barrel .5 moa did not take much load development. Before a 17 fireball, I would go 17/223. And if I did not have another 17 rem to load for, probably would have built the Ar in 17/223. To get the highest velocity out of the 17 rem, especially with 30 gr bullets, I would spend the extra money for factory brass.

I bought a well used Remington 788 SA in 222Rem that I would like to rebarrel to 17 Rem, will this fit into the 222 Rem magazine?

shortthroat, I’m not familiar with 17 CCM brass. Is it similar in size to 17 Rem?

No it is aCooper original cartridge about 3/4 the size of a Hornet. Roughly based off of 5mm Velodog. Designed for 9 grains of powder give or take. Rarely seen now but probably the single most efficient 17 round.

I have a 221 FB that I just enjoy shooting, it currently produces a less than 0.25” 5 shot group all day. I am using a Savage action with a 223 bolt and a single shot follower. Sometimes I have to assist the cartridges into the chamber. There was mention of a different set up of the bolt of the 17 FB, which I still plan to build on a Savage action. What do I need to have done to the bolt to eliminate this issue?
