resize a loaded cartridge ?

I have 80 loaded cartridges from my old 6 mmBRX ...Can I just shove the shoulder back 5 to 6 thou. & use in a different rifle ??? I removed the decapping pin from my FL sizing die..I managed to shove the shoulder back enough to match the new chamber..Can this ammo be used safely ???

I think your bullet will top out in the die and will be pushed more into the case. I use a Redding body die when rounds are to tight to chamber or if I need to bump the shoulder a little more.

I generally pull bullet pour out powder into scale pan, size them reseat bullet. Then fire form to new rifle.
Being a neck sixer I've had to do this s fee times.

Mike06 I'm using a standard FL Redding 6mmbr sizing die w the de-capping stem removed..Funny thing, the bullet seems loose now..Won't move for or aft..But I can spin it ..Just unsure about this...mike in ct

You resized the neck with the bullet in place. Lead and gilding metal are "dead" metals, but the brass will spring back; this allows radial clearance between the bullet and the case. If the bullet is seated with the shank below the neck-shoulder junction, a donut may be present; the donut gets impressed on the bullet shank and prevents axial movement of the bullet.

Thanks, that explains a lot...The more I think on this, the worse this idea seems...mike in ct

I would not do this. Putting a loaded round into a press and then pushing it into a die sounds like a dangerous proposition. Sounds a lot like how a rifle works, one that is pointed at your face when you push that ram down.

While not commenting on the safety of SIZING loaded rounds, the above is exactly what happens when you seat a bullet.

Touche. You are exactly right. Seating a bullet is the same thing. Maybe it is the force involved in a sizing die that makes me uneasy about it.

I am totally surprised you were able to size the neck with a bullet in the case.
That case and bullet will be completely undersized by quite a few ‘thou.

Please measure that case and one that wasn’t sized, you WILL see a large difference.

The only way I would have attempted to size a case that was loaded would be a body die or bushing die with the bushings out an that is only if my cases are snug going in my chamber a different chamber with shorter headspace shoving shoulder back 6 or 7 thousands No I would start with new brass you are asking for a case seperation.

Resized cartridge .262 as loaded .268 Mike
That bullet is now .006” undersized, it will rattle down the bore of your rifle.
You can fire it safely if you wish, no harm, no foul, but PLEASE DO NOT RUN ANYMORE OF YOUR LOADED CASES THROUGH A FL DIE.
You require a BODY ONLY DIE if you wish to size loaded cases/cartridges.

I was using a le wilson hand die to seat the other day and the thought occurred to me that it would be really really bad if a round detonated inside it.
