Request Info On 6X47. Good Idea?

Hey all.

I have a Browning Target model in 223. Bought it on a whim and I already have a Savage in 223.

So I'm thinking about re barreling the Browning to a 6X47. Any thoughts? Any other options for a caliber for a 223 convert?

204 Ruger, .20 Tac .17 Rem, there are lots out there, depending on what you want to do.

I assume you're talking the 647 - old school, based off the trip-deuce? If not and are thinking the 6x47 Lapua, then you need the larger bolt face. At that point, I'd flip the action for the proper one, rather than open that one up. Mostly because it seems that the .378 is usually in demand by a lot of shooters.

Maybe I can answer this as I learned the hard way.

You can neck up a Remmy 222 to 6x47, totally different than the below!

You neck down a 6.5x47Lapua to 6mm (6-6x47 or 6.0x47Lapua)

As stated you can change the bolt head and barrel on your 223, but it may not be worth it! Just find and old 22-250,243,308 and you have your action for your 6.0x47Lapua build!

If your going to do any PD hunting, keep the 233 for shots less than 300yds, get something bigger for longer shots!

Request Info On 6X47 re-barrell

Max -

Since the Savage bolt rifle is basically a "switch barrel" design, why not re-barrel
( get a different barrel(s) / chambering for IT ?

You can also swap-out Savage bolt heads/bolt face.

The Savage is likely to be the best candidate for top accuracy, to boot... IMHO.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

The 6x47 was based on the 222 Magnum case, not too easy to find these cases these days.
It was semi-popular as a 100-200 Benchrest cartridge during the transition from the 222 Remington to the 22 or 6mm PPC. A friend of mine, who has shot and won at World Championship level, shot the 6x47 with some success in the late 70's-early 80's timeframe. Said a case full
of Winchester 748 did the trick for him.

A friend of mine shoots a 6 - 204 on a Savage rifle and it shoot very well. I shoot a full blown 6PPC and he makes me work to beat him. It does work.

maxowner,
the 6x47 ORIGINAL was a 222mag opened up to 6mm, it consistantly shot in th .010's in br comp. using 70 smk, and 4198 or 748 back in the 1970's
i had on on a sleeved 600, hart bbl lv rig that won matches in spite of the shooter

the velocites basicly match the Lapau6x47 of today

the 222mag bras is hard to get and the 204,built on the 222m case is possibly a source however the neck thickness may be a problem going from .20-,243

Bob

Max, i indicated the original 6x47 would about match the 6x47 lapau, i ment to say the 6BR with 70 grainers, as the original will give an honest 3150 with the old powders, i do not know what it would do with the new more modern powders available today. thde 4198 loads were in the 23-24gr range and 748 in the 26gr range- bbl life was not a question

BR agrigates ran in the .1's to low .2s depending on shooter and wind. the PPC replaced it with the added velocity (AND POWDER0)

I would be all over a 6-.204, which is the same dimensionally as the old 6x47, and it's a really great old round. I know an old timer with a 6x47 that was built many years ago, and it still shoots so well it's scary, never groups outside of one ragged hole.

Or you could go with a 6X45,(.223 necked to 6mm) which is still a good round with just a little less capacity.

I have made 6X47 brass for my friend from .204 brass with no ill effects, and they seem to work great. Though the newer brass I acquired is still not as nice as the old Herter's .222Mag brass he has from god knows when. Stuff is older than I am, but just super nice brass.

I think either the 6X47 or 6X45 would be a good, fun round to have, and I doubt you could hurt the barrel unless you really put some effort into it. A .223 will last thousands of rounds, who knows how long it will go necked to 6mm, 6000-8000 maybe?

Make it with a slow twist for the light bullets and you will have a super accurate 300yd rifle. Or you could do a 1-10 and shoot the 88gr Berger FB and have a great 500yd rig. Either way, it will be one heck of a fun rifle that will last nearly forever.

Max, kenny is right, the twist we shot was 1x14 for the 70's and no one shot heaver, they were awson out to 300in BR matches with .150moa often

lTHe heavier bullets will take more twist, if you want to reach, use what the 6br or 6ppc shooters use for these weights it is the bullet length that demands the twist , not the weight, Call Sierra tech line and they will help on the twist.

I wish i still had my sleeved 600 lv , sold it and others to send kid to college

Bob; make the kid buy you another one. ;)

Thanx Kenny.

I'm still unsure what cases I would use to make 6X47 brass.

222 Magnum....?

Max, i would use the R/P 222m if you can get it, as the expansion of the necks is 224-244, - the necks of most 222 style cases are not over .013" so they get thin when expanded, however case life is forever in the 6x47 with minimal neck sizing, tight chambers

although we had neck turners in the 70's they were rarely used as the r/p brass then was very good- we did turn the 6x47 as the expanded neck was not always uniform, then we annealed the necks- they would often reload 12-15 times with out problem

the 204 is the next choice as it is new brass and available, the body is identical to the 222m and once fireformed you will never know the difference
