Replacement BOlt for a 700 pro's & cons

Gotta switch barrel 700 with a pinned recoil lug.

If one needs a new bolt is it cheaper or better to
#1- buy a new used rem 700 bolt or
#2 get a ptg bolt & get a smith to put the handle on etc

Pro's & cons please with $$$ in mind
Thanks, Sam

I use a lot of PTG bolts in my shop, I feel you get more value for your money with a PTG bolt with an .062 firing pin hole, properly fitted, bolt handle timed, TIG welded with a PTG firing pin assembly.
Not all gunsmiths are qualified TIG welders, ask to see samples of their work. Fitting an over size bolt requires special tooling to ream the action bolt raceway concentric with the threads and center line of the action, if you use a new bolt the same diameter as your original you still have all the inconsistancies of a flopping ill fitting bolt, gain nothing and may as well pick up a used Remington bolt.
A PTG bolt, .062 firing pin hole, coned bolt nose, Sako extractor, fluted bolt body, PTG threaded bolt handle with aluminum knob will run about $375.00 fitted and timed to your action.
A used Remington 700 stripped bolt body will cost $125.00 to $150.00, firing pin assembly around $75.00 plus an ejector, with out fitting or timing.
This is my opinion I'm sure you'll get others.
I hope this helps and is not to much information.
An after thought, you didn't say why you needed a new bolt, if you're adding another caliber to your switch barrel an over size bolt wouldn't work out

Ptg does make a nice bolt, however it is an art to find someone who can get it timed, on straight, welded, and still make it look like factory. You may also consider having a factory bolt bushed. The bolt is enlarged in the area that comes in contact with the action body, giving you tighter tolerances. and it will help with accuracy on a budget.

Dan in Alaska will do exactly that to a PTG bolt, and it will look like a factory job, and the price is a LOT LESS than bushing a factory bolt.....
