Replacement Barrel

Looking to replace the barrel on a Savage bolt action .223, this will be my first attempt at changing a barrel. Will be shooting short range bench rest. Which barrel would you recommend? Any information would be appreciated.

There are a bunch of Savage replacement barrels but quite a few guys have used the Kreiger Criterion barrel with good results. Northland Shooters Supply stocks them. Probably a good direction to go for the 1st pass. I'm sure they will help you out with what you need.

Lots of good barrels out there to be had with just a phone call.
From ready to screw into your receiver and shoot, to needing a smith to chamber it for you.
You just pay the money and take your chances with any of them..

Look into savage shooters.com. I've used nothing but ershaw barrels an never a bad thing to say about them.

Larryh128,
I googled Northland Shooters Supply but my results come up site not found. Can you post the actual web address? Thanks, I would like to change the barrel on one of my Savage rifles.
Ron

What cartridge are you going to be shooting for short range benchrest? Any of the popular/contemporary short range benchrest cartridges utilize a .308 bolt face which you are lacking with a rifle that was chambered in .223 Rem. Just something to consider before you get too deep ;)!

That is the beauty of the Savage, he can change the bolt face rather easy. So it does not matter that the rifle currently has a 223 at the moment.

I think Jim only advertises on the SavageShooter forum as a vendor. You dont have to be paying member to view his listings but you might have to registrar. Here is his link. Great guy. I have purchased many items from him over the years. He stocks several different brands on savage pre-fits. I would recommend getting a slow twist 223 or convert to 6BR. Jim has got me a couple of special ordered barrels from Shilen and all have performed well.

Luck, Tim

i just went thru this..i ordered a criterion bull ( large shank ) 22-250 and his target lug..the jury is still out on this set up, as it sure wasn't a winner out of the box..this barrel is particular about what it shoots..the rifle was a .5 or better shooter @ 100m w/ the savage barrel..i should have let well enough alone..my next barrel will be pacnor or brux.

I have had good luck with the mcgowens and shilens. I have had trouble with my criterion as being really fussy.

I guess i got spoiled buy the way the savage barrels shoot ( 22-250 LRPV, 6mmbr LRPV ). this criterion acts like it wants to shoot ( 2 just about the same hole..then 3.. 1/4 " around the 1st hole ). i changed the recoil lug..which is much bigger than the savage target lug..i'm going to see if it's bottoming out or binding ..re seat and re torque the stock bolts..and shoot the same load to see if it improves.the barrel is a 9tw and i'm shooting 60gr hornady vmax ..34.8gr of h4895..laupua brass and rem 71/2 primer..i'll also try a varget load ..see if it likes that better..if not then on to something else

Ive shot some extremely impressive groups from Mcgowen barrels, clean up fast and I really like dealing with them and a fast turn around time for me.

Try sharpshooter supply at www.sharpshootersupply.com they specialize in savage rifles they have all the parts for bolt faces to change and barrels they have brux and douglas barrels they also have triggers stocks and tools to change out barrels take a look good luck

To be fair to SSS..i sent my LRPV 6mmbr to them for a time & true and the Evo target trigger at the end of April 2012..i received it back ( totally satisfied with the work and trigger ) on July 1, 2012..they require a $25 deposit to " save a spot " in their work load..fair enough..so 60 days in high season isn't bad...Lisa answered all my emails..so communication was good. i think they have found a way to manage their work load..that wasn't in place before.

I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who's beyond middle age. If you're old enough to collect social security you might not live long enough to see whatever you order.

Ordered a Brux barrel and SSS stock on December 9, 2011 and was told 10 weeks "to be safe". They charged my credit card that day. The barrel arrived in August - eight months. Still haven't seen the stock - almost nine months. Never again.

I'm with you Dave, once was enough with me also!

Dave, You got me beat. Sent an action for a rebarrel job to a well known shop in March '11, estimated to be returned in September, got it back February '12.
