replace sling stud w/ picatinny - M40A1 HTG

I've got a Remington 700 with a McMillan M40A1 HTG fiberglass stock. I would like to replace the foregrip sling stud with a short picatinny rail so that I can use an Atlas bi-pod. Any one done this or know a short and sweet method for doing it? I can take it to a gunsmith, but I figured if it were a simple procedure (I do my own bedding and I have a vertical mill if needed) or if there were a kit or something, I would do it myself.

I was thinking of simply inletting the barrel channel for a couple of T-nuts through the foregrip then using button heads or something to fasten a small 3.5" rail.

Your planned method doesn't sound bad at all. I would add a little bedding compound between the rail and stock to insure a good fit.

If you have a mill, you could always make a 4" long rectangular block, maybe 3/16" thick, with threaded holes spaced to the holes in the rail and mount it in a recess in the barrel channel with a little bedding compound. If you added pillars between the two it would be rock solid.

Either way, I think it will work just fine.
