Removing tempilaq

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
So after I aneal my brass what is the best way to get rid of the reaminaing tempilaq on the inside of the mouth of the case?

Alcahol?

Use other "sacrificial" cases to set your heat and time.

50% alcohol will work but like stated above, recommend using a few pieces of scrap brass to get your timing down. When I used the drill/socket method that's what i did and it worked ok.

1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand, etc.

Not to change the thread but when I bought my Benchsource life got a lot easier. It was a great investment for me.

Good Shooting.

I using the stuff. Worked on using a count process like Jet posted...No more mess and I've yet to ruin a case.

Use an Egg timer/ Metronome/ or any simple cooking type timer. They are exact and quick and easy to operate.

As for cleaning the brass afterword, just put them in a tumbler with some walnut tumbling media. No Fuss, No Muss 8).

I do my anealing with a socket and drill so I have to indicate on each.

Why? Just use a throwaway case to determine the seconds until the Tempilaq turns (even several test runs on the same case), then heat the rest the same number of seconds. I use a cheap electronic metronome set to 60 bpm to help me count seconds.

As long as you apply the same torch setting to the same place on the cases, a second either way won't make a significant difference.

I use this.

My views are that acetone is hazardous and should be avoided and this is based on observations of people who used it in lab work for extended times (death) and treated it like water. If breathing it does not get you the chance of a fire ball might (static electricity).

My procedure has served me well. Heat the necks top to 1/2 inch below shoulder. Brass will appear to go liquid then glow dull read at that point go further down until 1/3 - 1/2 inch below shoulder. This can be observed in a darkened room.

91 percent Isopropyl alcohol is a benign solvent intended to be applied to your body and removes stuff like resizing lubes and unbaked in dirt and carbon reasonably well.
