Removing Remington stock finish

What removes the hard thick remington stock finish other than sanding? I would like to refinish a stock without doing a lot of heavy sanding. I was wondering if laquer thinner would cut it or disolve it? That stuff is tuff.

Strip it and you may find "white wood" underneath. Depends on the age of the stock/rifle. Lots of fake crap used to make wood stocks appear to be walnut these days. Sand some in the barrel channel or under the recoil pad/butt plate to see what it looks like, first.

I know for sure it's walnut. Rem 660 from the sixtys. They came out with that thick high gloss finish way back in the sixtys. It was developed by Dupont and even used on bowling pins I've heard. I have tried a few strippers and it hardly even dulls the shine. Thats what I mean by it's tuff.

in the past I have striped hard finishes with a piece broken glass, or back drag a blade form a hand planer, then follow with sand paper, it take some time, but worth while in the end. good luck painter

I wouldn't figure an old straight grained factory stock would be worth the trouble. Should be plenty of take-offs around if it's that bad.

The last 700 stock I did was using Citri Strip gel paste from Home Depot. It will not dissolve the finish like Zip Strip or other brands of caustic pastes. It was winter so using strong smelling pastes in the house was a no-no. (wife) Use a paint brush to apply a thick coat then cover with aluminum foil and let it sit for a couple of hours. The foil keeps it from drying out. The finish will soften enough to scrape off with a dull knife or utility knife blade. Repeat application as needed. This finish is not easy to remove.

I stripped an old BDL stock with the thick gloss finish Remington use to use. Tried everything. Stripper helped, but it was really tough.
