Removing glued in action

I have my late fathers old bench gun - built by Fred Sinclair forever ago. (XP100 action for the curious).

The stock is cracked and I want to give it a full restoration - have the stock painted, melonite the bolt, polish it, and hang it up in the shop.

How do I crack this thing out of there?

Put the iron on scope bases with the barrel in a vise. Once the tang and loading ramp get too hot to hold your finger on it remove the iron and pry the stock down. You wont hurt the broken stock. It wont take that much pressure to bust it loose. Grind out a big channel and repair with jb weld. Send the stock to bc’z to get a repaint then ill help you glue it back in

I'm comfortable with the repair and bedding. Already talking to BC'z to get it re-finished. Appreciate the help fellas.

Any tips on who can melonite the bolt?

You can talk to a local production machine shop and see if they can get it in on a batch. With the 3 piece bolt design i wouldnt get it melonited id get it blued. Itll probably cost $200-250 to get it melonited and the handle and bolt nose may fall off from the heat if there is any on whatever process you choose.

With a clothes iron set on high (cotton) and setting across the scope bases, I put a narrowed door shim wedge between the barrel channel and barrel and tap it in so there's some pressure. Every couple of minutes, give a tap or three. In about 10 minutes it will come loose. The upward pressure from the wedge helps it come loose w/o heating the epoxy excessively.

Good shootin' -Al

That action has been glued in for over 40 years. The foam core of the stock is deteriorating and turning to dust. It'll never be shot again... just want it to look nice :)

That old epoxy turns loose pretty easily. Skip otto always demonstrated how to check your glue in one time. He grabbed the barrel and slammed the stock on my bench like a caveman. He said the scope and glue in is good.
