Removing glued in action.

The old way was to put a wedge between the barrel and end of the stock. Just a little pressure and then apply heat to the receiver. Most used a clothes iron.

I bought a vintage Sunbeam iron at a junk/thrift store for just this purpose. Weighs 5 times what a new one does. Attach a flat one piece base to the receiver and let her sit for an hour or so. New irons are junk they have a nanny state shut off feature that kicks in if it is not being moved.

I have only separated one. I put the rifle in the cleaning cradle
put one hand on the rear of the stock, then hit near the end of the barrel w/a rubber hammer. It only took to licks to pop loose. No heat used. LDS

Never tried what Larry suggests, but using heat on a glued sleeve could compromise the action to glue, while getting it all hot enough to come out of the stock.

Exactly my fear might un glue both action and sleeve from stock, wonder if freezing will release sleeve correctly from stock without messing up action sleeve union

Ive pulled out a bunch of sleeved xp’s the same way as regular actions. Set an iron on the scope bases for 15mins or so. Once you feel the tang get warm grab the barrel right in front of the forend and push the stock away from it. Been shooting glue ins for 25yrs and been removing actions from bedding the same way. Works every time. Any longer heating will compromise bedding and mess up the paint.

Remember- only use as much heat as it needs. Dont set it on there and walk away. Check it by pulling it apart every couple mins. Make sure that you dont slam the stock into something as it breaks loose. Ive dropped them on the floor, chipped paint on vises, etc. once you feel warmth in the tang start checking it.

I got it apart and only minimal bedding will be required for repair, going to get new paint first! Thanks for all the helpful tips..

Seems you are trying to compromise the action to glue joint, eh?

Sometimes glue ins can be pretty stubborn. If yours proves to be such, and you have to apply what would be seemed considerable heat, then of course three is a chance that the action sleeve assembly could be compromised.
as for the heat source, a cheap iron is great. I say cheap because you do not want a high dollar one that is designed to shut down if you leave it unattended too long.
