remington walnut stock

I have a remington stock that I'm considering refinishing. It's off a 700 adl built in 1975. Any idea what the original finish is and what I could use to strip it?

any recommendations on what I should use to refinish? I've heard of tru-oil numerous times does that make a good, durable, waterproof finish?

Give the tru oil a try iv redone several and the really turned out nice.the main thing is take your time and be patient .I like a gloss finish so I do 6 - 10 coats and wax after about 30 days of curing.for stripping I use arousal paint stripper from wal Mart hardware dept.

Remington used Dupont RKW finish, Don't know if it will respond to a chemical stripper. Probably have to go mechanical. Dennis

ceritstrip from brownells takes off the catalyzed finishes that the bigger companys have used over the years.
