Remington replacement trigger, Shilen or Timney?

I recently had a Remington 700 shipped to me that was packed so poorly that I now need to replace the trigger. It is a hunting gun so need for a Jewell. It looks like alot of people are using the Timney as a low cost alternative. I was thinking Shilen, but can't find much feedback on them. Any ideas?

If your trigger is a X-Mark, go with the Timney. Due to Timney comes with a safety. If it is a older trigger go with the Shilen. I have had and still do have both. I do like the Shilen better but there is nothing wrong with a Timney at all.

I won a gift certificate for 50% off on a Timney at the Midwest VHA shoot that I will never use. Would you like it? If so, PM me.

I agree with you when you say "your gun is a hunting rifle so no need for a Jewell". If you have the money then buy a Jewell, but I personally think they are for benchrest guns that need a trigger pull under 1 pound. Now after that being said... buy a used Remington 40X LE trigger! They are great triggers. They are as good as any Timney-Rifle basics IMO. I have them on every single Rem 700 I own. They adjust down to feather weight and break like glass. Remington puts them on their top of the line models... like the 40X, Senderos and 700P's. The X-mark Pro trigger is not comparable to the 40X LE trigger! If you want to spend the money and buy the best then buy a Jewell, if not, then buy a 40X LE. Here is one on accurateshooter for $75.

No need for a Jewell??? Hogwash!
A Jewell makes ANY rifle better with it's consistency.

I put a Timney 1.5-3lb trigger on my last hunting rifle build. They are absolutely NO better than the old style factory Remington triggers. Actually, I think I had an easier time adjusting the old factory triggers to a better pull. So I basically wasted $125 when I could have just kept the original trigger on it and been better off. But really wish I would have put a Jewell on it...Lesson learned.

Newest build wears a Jewell Hunter/Varmint with bolt release/bottom safety and I couldn't be happier. adjusts from 1.5oz all the way up to 3lb. They are quite simply the best. An engineering wonder of all triggers :)

Thats why I said if your gonna spend the money then buy a Jewell. If not, find somebody with a take off 40X LE for really cheap. I think everyone would agree Jewell is the best of the best. Like you said, its a waste of $125 to buy a Timney, Rifle Basics etc etc etc.

Buy the best, and cry once! Cannot beat the Jewell Hunter model with the standard Remington safety and bolt release lever.

As said, weights are adjustable to those that are perfect for a carry, not benchrest, rifle.

I like the design that permits complete and quick dis-assembly for cleaning.

The Remington 40X-LE is a MUCH better trigger than either the Timney or Rifle Basics.

Nothing wrong with a Shilen trigger on a huntin' rifle. Rifle basix makes the safety kit for that trigger if you don't have the 'old style' trigger you can steal the saftey lever/parts off of.

Get a Jewell, you will be glad you did. I have one on every single hunting rifle I own and wouldn't feel comfortable with anything else.

I would not spend my money on a timney trigger over a plain factory remington trigger. I've never had a Shilen so I can't say on that one.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like most prefer the 40X or the Jewell. I''ll probably look for a 40X takeoff. I would love to have a Jewell to see the difference for myself. I just can't justify putting that much in this gun, especially if I decide not to keep it.

Thats was always my view on Jewell....until I bought one...
It was love at first feel and Im now hooked for life :)

But the 40X trigger is a much better choice than the Timney and will serve you well if thats what you decide.

Once I buy a Jewell I don't consider it money invested in the gun because
When its time to sale the gun I keep the Jewell for my next one 8)

Just took apart my new M700 SPS Varmint to build a mid-range tube-gun using the receiver/bolt and am selling all the other parts if you might be interested in the trigger. While I've only dry-fired it, was good enough that I thought about keeping for my tube-gun build. But, went with the Jewell HVR as I like a reliable 4-5oz trigger and don't think that is possible with any factory trigger.

If you can afford it, the CG X-treme trigger is far better than either the Timney or Jewell triggers... especially if you are NOT just shooting BR. The two-stage CG is (IMHO) the best trigger I have ever shot with on any rifle... I have Geissele triggers on all my AR based guns, and they are good. The CG trigger is terrific.
