Remington M 7 vs M 700

I just saw this statement on another Forums...

"The action on the Model 7 CDL is the same action as the XP-100 from the custom shop and the XR-100 single shot varmint rifle."

Truth?

Trying to find a donor action for a HP Silhouette gun (6.5x47 Lapua probably) and was told by a well known smith that the action from a XR100 made a pretty good single shot custom rifle - which would work well for silhouette. If the M7 is the same action except being a repeater...well maybe....

I welcome any comments regarding using this action for a silhouette gun....

For a variety of reasons, I would rather use a 700 short action or one of the clones. Knowing how well a 700 can shoot when configured as a single shot, I do not think that there would be anything to be gained, for your application, by going to an action without a magazine cut. Of course, for any serious build a full blueprint and bolt sleeve would be in order, or you could go with a clone that already has the right clearances and is straight. There are several good ones.

The M7 is shorter than the 700 SA. You need to look and see what stocks would be available before trying to use a M7. Barrel threads and some parts are the same just a shorter action (lighter weight). All M7's I know of are repeaters with a 2.800" mag. They are nearly the same as the Rem 600 series from many years ago. The XP-100's were both single shot and repeaters sold as pistol's.

You have received good information so far. To elaborate a little more on the XP's. We have two different XP actions the XP-100 and the XP-100R. The standard XP-100 is a single shot and is slightly different than the XP-100R which is a repeater. The tang on the single shot XP-100 is short and does not contain a rear action screw. The rear action screw is in front of the trigger. The XP-100R is a repeater and does have the rear action screw in the tang like the Model 7. All three actions, the XP-100, XP-100R, and Model 7 all share a common bolt length and scope base setup. The XP-100's only had one hole on the back of the action for mounting a base unlike the model 7 that is drilled and tapped for two. Since the older XP-100 only had a single hole in the rear most people would use a single piece base. Others would purchase a model 7 two piece base and use it for a template to drill and tap the second hole in their XP.

So after all of this I still did not answer your question. Will a Model 7 make a good donor action for a silhouette gun....I say yes. The XP-100's are excellent actions and have done well converted into benchrest and varmint rifles. The XP-100R and Model 7 are basically a repeater version (minus the rear screw placement) of the XP-100 single shot. If you desire to 'trick' your action Dave Kiff (PTG) makes a fine one-piece bolt that fits the Model 7 that can be ordered to tighten up the play in the raceway. Drop in a nice Jewell trigger, a one-piece scope base/ring combo from DNZ products and go shoot. The DNZ mount is a one piece base/ring combo made from aluminum is an awesome piece of machining. I am not associated with them but have their mount on multiple XP rigs.

Build it and go shooting...
