Remington LimbSaver Butt Pad Decomposition Issue

Hello there, just purchased a Rem 700 Sendero in .17 Rem, in new condition, on auction, without really having a good look at the few pictures available. The firing pin was locked by the J-Lock device, unfortunately the rifle didn't come with the key (sigh...) but I managed to find one after a few days. The worst surprise was the Limb Saver butt pad that was decomposing into some kind of tar or sticky goo! I took a hacksaw and replaced it with one from the same brand that seems to behave a lot better. I wonder whether someone got the same problem with those slime pads? Thanks for your attention.

W D 40 on the screws to make the screwdriver not sticky in the rubber will brake down the rubber and basically melt it. And once again ask me how I know

Yep. I have one that came off of a CDL in 223. I had it for several years before I got around to shooting it and had a heck of a time getting it out of my safe. The butt pad had attached itself to the carpet in my safe.
I ordered another from Brownells and put it on. It was another Remington limb saver just like the oem. It fit right up.
I think at one time Remington had a recall on those but I’m old and can’t remember when that was.

Waverly

Same here, It seems to happen when it's left on carpet, Or at least on the few I had happen, They were sitting on carpet in my safe.

I don't know why they would put a limbsaver pad on a caliber that small though. You can get a replacement on Ebay that is prefit if you look for the factory pad.

Limb Saver had a known material problem several (like 6 or 7) years ago. They replaced mine free or charge.

Another one that had one stick to the safes carpet. It was just a bit on the comb end that was touching the carpet.

The problem with them is universal. This is the only 100% failure as a product I have seen in our hobby. For about 5 years, on any stock I ordered I have implored Manners, who has used them, and McMillan, as well, to please, under no circumstances attach a Limbsaver, or any soft or thick pad by no name, as it’s likely theirs.

I’m actually more agitated at this company’s product and what does, than I am about the high cost of an ambitious bullet design not being 100% reliable downrange in a given application, the cost and scarcity of components, or how about this - Democrat’s gun policies.

They had one simple, non-critical, nonmoving part that they thrust into a world where the mastery of hard rubber butt pads that lasted as long as walnut and steel quietly and reliably endured.

They have in essence ruined our feelings toward countless certain guns of ours that this has happened to. I would never trust a free replacement of theirs After tedious sizing, alternative replacements are rarely the same thickness, affecting LOP, and look homemade.

Please, under no circumstances ever branch out into other lines of business or change your name.
