Remington Firing pin?

Perhaps if you shoot off-hand where minimal locktime is beneficial. The BR crowd tend to avoid them like the plague since they are finding proper and consistent ignition is a key element to winning, and apparently light f. p. springs have issues when thousands of an inch matter in group size.

A far better mod imho...is to let Greg at Gre-Tan bush the bolt face and reduce the firing pin diameter. This does away with the cratered primers that are so familiar to Remy shooters. The cratered primers lead one to believe that there is excessive chamber pressure when that may not be the case. Even better, send him the action with trigger and let him set the bolt timing correctly as well.

I would tend to think, as I have done on my Rem. 700's that it's the spring that needs the help, not the firing pin, especially if you have a J-loc bolt assy., that spring when compressed is kinked up and should be changed.

I read an artical one time pertaining to the remington firing mechanism. Remington spent a lot of money developing what they think is the best most consistent firing mechanism. I do agree with having a bolt face bushed and having a smaller firing pin, but just because someone makes an aftermarket product thats all shiny and pretty and claimed to be better, doesnt mean its a dam bit better. Look at the Panda actions. Panda actions are some of the wining est action there ever was or will be in benchrest and they use the remington mechanism. Kelbly goes a little further with there than probably remington does, to make sure there is no drag in there system but that can be done with a remington as well. I think it is a great design, and now that i know i can have a BAT action made with this same system i may start using them. I think Gary Ockock uses BAt actions with a remington firing pin design, and he is doing quite well with them. Bottom line is that the remington system is just fine other than being a little big on the pin size for some case designs. Lee

I made the mistake of "upgrading" my firing pin. Went straight back to the stock one after one trip to the range... very inconsistent. My gunsmith simply said... "told ya so..."

If your haveing problems with a light rem pin (alluminum steel tip) Somethings wrong and its not the pin. Although they do have there place. If your shooting on bags were lock time is not as big a consideration. Forget it. As far as stolle panda goes (great action) I know highpower shooters that have had pins bushed because they wont work with .473 small primer case head. (cratering) And guess what Stoll now offers a .068 pin dia. How about that
