Remington Extractor problems

I have a 223AI with a 223 bolt face. I keep having problems with the extractoc not extracting and it is hard to close the bolt because of the extractor. I have replaced the extractor and still have the problem.. Is there a special way to install it to prevent bending the extractor. This is a new problem for me and I don't know what to do. All help welcome. Robbie

Any time a Remington extractor is giving me fits I replace it with a Sako style extractor
and the problem has gone away........

I built a .20 Tactical that had that problem. I tried a couple of extractors with no luck. Wound up solving the problem by going in with a Woodruff key cutter and deepening the recess where the extractor goes and widening it slightly on both sides. I don't build many rifles with small bolt faces, but evidently it's a common problem with them as a friend of mine has two bolts that do the same thing and sent one of them to me to have a Sako extractor installed in it.

Thanks Mike did you turn the ID where the extractor back touches or horizonal area that the edge of the extractor touches towards the barrel?

I deepened the recess behind the extractor about .010" deeper and took a little off each edge widening the two point contact where the back of the extractor sets against the bolt. The first time I did it, it helped a little, but was still stiff closing the bolt. I took the extractor out and widened behind the extractor a little more and then it worked like it should. Of course, every time you take an extractor out, you about have to install a new extractor. If they bend taking them out, they won't work correctly if they are re-installed. Sorry about it taking so long to get back to you on this, but I wasn't notified that there was a response by e-mail and didn't check the thread.
