Remington Action Screw torque

What is the recommended torque value for a Rem700 long action in a bedded stock? Just found that mine were loose, and am not sure how much to tighten. I was nervous about stripping the threads.

I've heard 50 inch. Ibs. or "the short end of an allen wrench" as guidelines before. I've always used "two finger snug" with a hollow ground screw driver that fit correctly. In other words, not too much! That being said, I have a friend with a Remington PSS where the front action screw would only grab 1.5 threads! Need at least three full threads to come close to full strength.

65 inch-pounds is the recommended max for action screws with proper thread contact. Brownell's used to sell a Tee handle pre-set torque wrench specifically for that purpose. The max is recommended to protect the stock from splitting, not to protect the screw from stripping. The S.A.E. torque recomendation for Gr-5, 1/4 x 28 tpi is 11 ft/lbs (ie: 132in/lbs.) That's the automotive standard NOT a rifle standard. Now-a-days it seems like everyone is going the "torque everything" mode which makes sense in some aspects.
Be careful though "watercam" brings up a good point. I've seen many Ren action front screws with only 1-2 threads in contact and a longer screw needs to be installed.
