Remington 788 stock for rebuild

Helping a friend rebuild a 788. Only found a Boyd wood stock and he’d really like a composite. Called around and nobody else makes them anymore. How far off and difficult would it be to modify from a 700? Or would this not be practical? Any helps greatly appreciated

The Boyds stocks are fine, and a nice finish can be produced. I like the Varminter shape - and the factory black finish is composite like. ( Do they do the varmint in 788 inlet?) I'm guessing that the choices are small. I can live without the one with the plastic bits!

Mcmillan will make one for you. Thw actions are completely different animals. There would be alot of work to make it correct. And it may not come out the way you want.

Ok, thanks for the responses. He said he called McMillan and they said no but last night some other place said they had an old stock ready to go that he could get at a discount so I believe he’s good to go

Curious on the stock, could you possibly share a picture or two when he gets it? I have a pristine 788 carbine in 7-08 I plan on dropping into a composite stock.

Years ago I did a Bishop simi-inlet in walnut with 22line checkering for my BIL's 788 in 243. I offered to rebarrel it or at least make a muzzle brake for it but he was too cheap. It turned out pretty good and is still being used.

I have a 788 black composite short action stock. Ram line brand, bought used thinking it would fit my 243. It doesn’t and I have no use for it.

Yes, three action lengths. The .243 Win sized action was called the “extra-long” action. The (shorter) “long” action included .222, .223, 22-250 and 30-30. The only cartridge in the “short” action was the .44 magnum. It’s very common for people to order a short action stock for their .308, 7mm-08, .243 or 6mm Rem 788 only to find it doesn’t fit. When in doubt, measure screw spacing.

Edit: And just to make it more confusing it’s been reported that some of the later 22-250 guns were built on the extra long action. So again it’s important to measure distance between action screws.

How much do you want for it? Why didn’t it fit?
My 243 is a long action. The mounting bolts are a little over 7” apart. The stock I bought that doesn’t fit is for a short action, mount bolts are 6 3/4” apart. If this works for you and it’s for you or your friend I would send it if you just cover the shipping cost.
This is the first time I have been on this site so I am not sure how I send you my phone number without broadcasting to all on the site.

It’s for a friend, I’d definitely pay you an honest price for it if he wants it or if it will fit. I never realized the 243 was much longer then the 6mm Remington
