Remington 788 pillar bedding

This one is headed back to deepest, darkest Iowa where it's owner is ready to continue beatin' it like a red headed step kid. A few issues were identified and 'fixed' so it will be interesting to see how it behaves now. Sometimes these factory guns can surprise you. Both ways! ;)

It's okay.
I like seeing everyone else puttering, having fun while I'm too busy to make it out to the shop. Doesn't make me bitter at all....
I have a rifle needing to be finished sitting on the bench. Drives me crazy every time I walk past it.

There's nothin' to it but to do it, right? ;)

i have one in 308 shoots lights out with handloads .nice rifle

I've always admired the 788's but never owned one. Rumor has it that Rem quit making them because the cheaper gun was out-shooting their flag-ship 700!

Very nice pillar & glass bed job! But please educate me, why no front pillar & what is that in the middle? TIA

Them 788s always shot for me. Hell Fer strong to. I had the 7-08 version the first year everything but 22 cal. went to the carbine length. It was the first rifle I could get when Remington commercialized it. I had a 700 Varmint Special in 7-08 after it, but it never outshot the 788.

Many snub their nose at em, but I've owned several, a little sloppy feeling action, but the targets never showed it! All shot as good as any 700 I owned in same calibers.

Nice clean job!

There's an aluminum pillar in the front. The bedding covers the top .050 of it...same on the rear pillar.

The 'H' is a factory paint park on the wooden strut area separating the magazine cutout from the trigger area.

Since this rifle was, prior to it's arrival in the Forbidden Zone, an honest 5/8Ths inch 5-shot grouper, it is expected to, now, "shoot in the minus ZEROS at two hundred yards . . . when I do my part" . . . o_O:p
It was purchased from a pawn shop, in Rapid City, SD last fall - it produced surprising precision - honest <.625" [5-shot] 100Yd. groups. :)RG

Presidential Pawn?

Pretty decent Feb. conditions this afternoon, so, between pointing bullets, and "lubing jackets", we worked some testing/tuning into the work day. Sadly, Al's pillar bedding job failed to produce the expected, "MINUS ZERO" 5-shot groups . . . that said, BIG MIKE advised, that, now, even HE could hit a fox with the 788. :p

Following the initial two shots, to avoid confusion/chasing bullet-holes with reticle, I added 3-clicks of elevation - the rest is pretty straight forward . . . I think.;)For reference, the red rings are 3/8" thick & the inner white 1"; the Burris DOT is 3/8". RG
P.S. it's obvious I missed some condition changes . . . :p Just to please Al, I'll try some BenchMark again, and maybe a more powerful scope.
