Remington 788 bolt handle

A friend called today and asked if I knew how the bolt handle was attached on a 788, he said his "broke off". Did a search here and found out that they do sometimes come loose but no information regarding how they are attached. I have not seen the rifle in question so I don't know if it actually broke or simply came loose from the bolt sleeve.. Can anyone tell me how they were originally attached?

Thanks in advance.

I bet not. That thing looks VERY different from a 700.

New bolt handles were available at Numrich. Only the ball and shank are part of the handle , not the surrounding piece ( collar ) you see on the bolt body .

I also seem to remember the 788 bolt handle having a bad tendency to take a piece of the bolt sleeve with it when it breaks off. Check both. If the bolt sleeve is missing a chunk it's trash.

Ok, I'm betting the answer is, "sure, send it to me." Did i win? What are the stakes, 8lbs of H4350? Or is that too rich? Let's see, how about (10) 55gr FMJ .224? oOoOO, just looked that up too. Hmmm.... How about a picture of a box of small pistol primers?

Thanks for the replies. Hope to see the bolt this week and assess what actual is "broken" and suggest a solution to the owner.

I’m the luckiest bastard here. Owned many 788’s and used to be a hotrodder when it came to load development. On several occasions I had to wack the bolt open with a piece of 2X4 board due to loads that were well beyond any published maximum. Never lost a bolt handle (or an eye). I’m not in any way doubting the bolt handle thing. Just grateful for dumb luck.
