Remington 78 Sportsman Bedding Question

IMO, almost all bolt rifles will benefit from a proper bedding job. Whether it will shoot best with a floated or non floated barrel, is hard to say. Most every sporter rifle I bed, has the first couple inches of the barrel bedded along with the action. Most of the time this works very well, although I have on occasion removed the barrel bedding after less than perfect results. Its easier to remove bedding compound than to add it to the barrel channel afterward, so I recommend doing it with the action the first time. I just recently re-barreled a 78 Sportsman 270win,which is basically just a 700LA) in 6mmAI and bedded it into a CDL stock. Turned out great...

It sure will benefit from a good bedding job.
I like to let the barrels fully float from the recoil lug to the far end, and then if they don't shoot "and they usually do" I'll try a bit of up pressure on the front of the stock..
No real need to bed ahead of the recoil lug, unless it's a really heavy barrel.......

wood stocked guns may shoot better but they don't hold point of impact as well. with synthetic socks it usualy dosn't matter as much in my experience. treeman
