Remington 725 - just another 700?

I was walking through Sheels and a 1960ish Rem 725 in quite nice condition had a $200 price tag so I bought it for the action, not knowing anything about it other than the bolt looks like a plain Jane 700, the safety looks like an 1917 and it has a steel bdl style floor plate.

I won’t get it home for a few days, so the main question is how many of the dimensions are shared with the 700? Same barrel threads? Are replacement triggers from a 721 or 700 normally retrofitted? There’s not a lot of reliable information on the 725.

It’s a cool old gun in 30-06. (The picture isnt mine - just to show the action).

Stripper clip.

That was the first thing that popped into my head, but there are no grooves for the stripper clip to slide into.

Theres not a lot of these around, but unfortunately the one I have isn’t one of the rare models. A guy on gun broker has a similar one that didn’t sell for $500 and had to be resisted.

Leave it alone, please... stick a steel tube K4 on it, put on some red flannel, and go shoot deer.

Any idea what the cutout near the rear scope base was for?

Its a path for the broach (or some similar tooling) that cut the magazine well. It is in same place as a clip slot but it is too narrow for clips and no features at the sides for the stop bumps on the clips. I believe 721's had this feature as well.

if it is in nice condition, I may keep it like it is. super high quality rifle. a deluxe better made version of the 700. it is the same safety as the 1917. best deal I have heard of in a long time. good problem to have. it is worth some money.

It’s very interesting almost as many 280s were made as 270s - it wouldn’t be until the 725 was discontinued that the 7 mag came out and put a dent in 280 sales. I always considered the 280 a fairly modern cartridge.
