Remington 722 questions

Ok, so there is a Remington 722 chambered in 222 on a local auction… it’s what I call a field model with iron sights and scope mounts, how ever it is missing the rear iron sight… it’s what I would call in lightly used condition… my questions are, first what is just a 722 action worth? As I might rather have a little different of a barrel on it( still chambered in 222) , and or would it be hard to thread end of factory barrel? I’m only a little nervous as at a price I’m better off just buying an action and building one… I don’t have any issues using it like it is, but might like to put a suppressor on it at some point.. thanks for the input

Spike

IMO you are better off with a more modern action. The extractor is a weak point of the 721-722.

The 722 I have chambered in 300 Savage with the normal sporter weight barrel measures .585 at the muzzle. That doesn't leave much shoulder for your suppressor to butt up against. I also have a 721 that I had upgraded and rebarreled. Never had any issues with this rifle. I have built 2 rifles recently on Mack Bros actions and I feel they are a great buy for the money. But to be honest you will wind up with $1500.00 to $2500.00 in a custom build.

Spike, if you buy that rifle, and spend time shooting it, I doubt you’ll want to cut or thread anything. My LGS insists that those were the most accurate, mass produced, sporting rifle in their day. Still quite impressive to this day. Woodchucks don’t stand a chance if you have a clear shot up to ~200yds.

~20 grs H4198 50gr SPSX @.010 off; IMR4198 is an excellent choice as well.

I have one. I bought it in 2007 for 375 dollars. I took off the barrel, sold it and the stock and hardware. I had a smith put on a used former BR barrel in 222 (Hart 20 inch HV) and put it in a 40XB stock. I hung a 700 trigger in it and I would venture it has another 1000 rounds of PD accuracy in it (after 1300 so far.). My total outlay with a used 6-18 Leupold target on it was just under $1000, including the McM stock I bought but went with the old 40X instead.

The only concern I have is that it has the unobtainium extractor in it. If it breaks, I have to have a Sako extractor put in it.

I find it to be pretty much a 700, all said and done.

I have no idea about threading for a can. But barrels are expendables.

The 722- 222 Rem mag i bought around 2005 shoots .5 moa all day long, nothing has been done to it.
Shoots 4 different powders really well with 50 gr bullets, only one it wouldn't that I tried was IMR 4198.

This 722 was built by Norm Dixon in 1986 hart bbl 1:14 twist light varmint tight neck .244 very accurate using w748 and 52 berger and 52 Hollister bullets

Just picked up another 722 in 222, same rifle you are talking about. I also have one in 222mag and wouldn't get rid of either as they easily shoot 1/2" groups with many in the 1/4 to 3/8" 5 shot groups. I doubt you are going to do a custom gun for even close to the same price that will shoot much better. They are great rifles as are the 788 Rem in 222 and many other calibers. I've never had a extractor problem so I don't let it keep me from shooting these rifles. I'm also a 20gr 4198 fan but shoot 52gr Sierra bullets. Paid $650 for my last 722 in 222 down at Tulsa.

I like the old 722s, I’ve had them in 222, 257R and 300 savage, never had an issue with the extractor and the accuracy was really good on each of them. The 222 is my favorite, such a sweet shooter. There is no recoil to speak, they aren’t terribly loud but suppressors are fun too. I don’t know how much meat you need to thread on a suppressor but your favorite gunsmith could answer that easy enough. If you’ve never owned a 222 your in for a treat, they aren’t very picky, lots of powder and bullet combos work great. Use the search feature here if you want to bring up past discussions on the subject, there’s a lot of info right here. I bought my 722 222 two decades ago for a song out of a pawn shop, 722s seem to go for 400-800 range, depends on the condition.

To add which has been hinted on i believe the 722 will drop into 700 stocks and 40X stocks, 700 triggers and Barrels also work. I'm kind of a guy if I have an older factory rifle of any value that shoots great I don't like to pull it apart. If a hunting rig shoots 1/4 to 3/4" at one hundred yards its good enough for my abilities.

I had a 722 in .300 Savage some years ago. It was quite accurate and a great deer rifle. In an effort to eliminate the redundancy of the .300 Savage in comparison with my .308 rifles, I sold the 722.

I've had a 722 in .222 Remington for many years, along with a couple of Sako .222s. The Sakos are both accurate, but the Remington will outshoot the Sakos. I don't need any more rifles, but based on my experience with only two 722s, I'd recommend these rifles to anyone looking for a good quality gun that will likely shoot very well.

A very good friend bought a new Remington 722 in 222 the first year it was offered.

For half its life it had a Weaver K8 and for the other half it had a Lyman 10X.

Kept East Tennessee safe from charging groundhogs for over 40 years.

Made annual trips to Pennsylvania to protect those citizens too from marauding groundhogs.

Made one three-day trip to Montana and put a serious hurt on the prairie dogs.

Never fired a factory round of ammo. All ammo was loaded with powder charges thrown from a Lyman 55.
