Remington 700 VLS vs. Savage 12BVSS

You should get a few replies to this, Dinglebird.

I personally prefer the Savage 12, either BVSS-S or Varmint Low Profile. I was a "Remington man" for years and can't for the life of me understand why. I hate the action, the bolt rattles around in it, the extractor is a joke and in recent years it seems the quality control has gotten out of control.

There is no question the M700 is the most popular customizable action, just because there are so many after-market parts available for it. It was the darling of early benchrest shooters, the 721 and 722 first) because it is a "push feed" action and could be made into a good BR rig. In the early days, Remington was heeavily involved in target shooting and developing new guns and calibers. Those days are gone now.

The Savage action is gaining a good following and as time goes by more and more custom parts will become available for it -- just pure capitalism dictates it. The separate bolt head is one of the key factors to out-of-box accuracy in the Savages. The single-shot action is as strong as they come and stiff as can be.

Some of the least-expensive Savages have a cheap look to them and some of the composite stocks are less than desirable. But even the $350 ones are shooters. All of them share the ubiquitous barrel nut, which means you can change barrels/calibers anytime you want, in a matter of a few minutes, with simple tools.

It's like picking from the Ford/Chevy/etc. line-up ... you make your choices and you have your reasons. Either way, get a 6 BR and really enjoy it.

thanks reed, you just made my mind up for me. im gonna get a savage for sure, sounds like remington isnt what it used to be, and sounds like you can really get a good gun from savage for a great price. Ill get it in .308 so all i got to do is change out the barrel when i decide to go 6mmBR. I dont have the money or resources to shoot 6mmBR right now. I have no reloading tools and factory 6mm Ammo is outrageous, not to mention rare. I might be able to shoot it if i could pay somebody on this sight to load it for me, that would be nice.

Thanks for the help

You really have lots of options, Dinglebird. You can get a Savage in .223 and have a blast shooting factory ammo, especially the Black Hills stuff, keeping in mind the Savage has a 1:9 twist and likes 55-gr. to 69-gr. bullets pretty well. When you have the cash, you can order a barrel in whatever caliber you want and just change the bolt head,I think my last one was in the $40-$45 range) and be in a position to change barrels and calibers any time you want. A .223 bolt head will cover .222, .223, .222 Mag., .221 and the .308 bolt head will cover anything else except big magnums and PPCs.

Changing a bolt head can easily be done in 15 minutes with common tools. Changing barrels, with a barrel nut wrench and a vise, in about 20 minutes. The Savage is a very flexible rifle.

Take a visit to,Sharp Shooters Supply) and also to,SavageShooters.com) to get some good ideas about what options you can have.

Enjoy ... ReedG
