remington 700 sps varmint .308

I just got a rem 700 sps varmint in .308 with a Bell and Carlson varmint stock. I currently have a barska 6-24x42 varmint scope on it. I would like to do a series of upgrades uncluding: new barrel, trigger, action trued, luggs lapped, glass beding, and tatical bolt knob.

In what order would you guys reccomend that I make these upgrades, and if you have any other suggestions for upgrades, please let me know.

Thanks!

I would first upgrade the scope.A good glass will take a big factor out of seeing what this rifle can do.Secondly the trigger is next, get a shilen and they are reasonable.Skim bedding would be a good idea.As far as getting the action trued,it is not as important as lapping it first and getting a really good barrel down the way.

+1 for Jons' answer,,,,, 'can' the scope. Action truing & lug lapping aren'y usually done unless the barrel is being replaced at the same time. Bolt knobs are just 'candy', won't make it shoot any better. C/O the factory trigger. Make sure you've got quality mounts and rings.

thanks guys! I am relatively new to the gun building field. I have been reloading for accuracy in my rifles for several years and I want to start getting the best out of them.

Thanks, keep the suggestions coming please

based off of a couple of recent remmys,

1. new barrel, might as well true the action at that time, gunsmiths I've used usually include lapping lugs, bolt face as part of the trueing.

2. bedding, bedding both of my bell carlsons helped tremendously

3. trigger Might not have to get a new trigger, talk to your smith, maybe its good, maybe he can make it better, or maybe u gotta by a new one.

some of the stuff you can do, like bedding.

like the gents said some of the other stuff is eye candy, I never liked the tactical bolt knob digging into my back while carrying it.

after the gun can shoot, then scope would be next on my list.

Another question, I have a hard time finding decent articles on bedding an action besides the one on 6mmb. Any suggestions? also, what is the difference between skim coat bedding and glass bedding and which one is better?

Thanks

Im no expert, but I think your B&C has an aluminum bedding block, so skim bedding with devcon ,or whats on my rigs is a compound from score high gunsmithing.

snipers hide has some good pic by pic tutorials, you tube does also. There are so many techniques its mind boggling. Read them all and figure out if its for you

another question i had, is it a good idea to upgrade your bolt, or will the factory bolt when trued and lapped be fine?

Saxon

what is your shooting experience level. What is your shooting discipline, handloading experience?

unless you plan on being a competitive shooter in certain disciplines this year I think the remington action and bolt will do fine. In some disciplines such as tactical long range stuff the rem will do fine any day of the year.

The other thing is, if your not an experienced handloader than the weak link is going to be your loads, then the scope, your experience, then the gun. IMHO (barska might be number one)

I have been shooting for about seven years. mainly working with the t/c pro-hunter in 308. because the prohunter is so much different that bolt actions rifles, I am not experinced in accuratizing them.

I shoot out to 500 yards, and although I have worked up some accurate loads for my gun, I feel the action is too loose and doesn't lend itself easily to modifications.

I feel like I am good at reloading and I pay attention to detail which I think helps. I have a solid reloading set up that I am confident in loading accurate rounds.

As I said prior, I am new to modifying a bolt action rifle, so I was looking for suggestion that would help me achieve my goal. I have a rifle range that I could shoot 1000 yards, and I am hoping to be able to do so. I also want to be able to shoot woodchucks with this gun. If I can get my gun to shoot accuratly enough at my standards, I am also looking to get into competition in the near future.

I know my barska scope is not one I would want for competirion, but as soon as I set aside the funds, I plan on getting a better one.

Ive have a rem .308 that is trued, re barreled. This gun will shoot under .25moa at near ranges. I shoot out to 800yds and the gun will out shoot me.

unless there is something wrong with your action a good gun smith will be able to make that thing shoot very well.

If your talking about, about new bolt, truing, bolt knob etc. at that point you might as well start looking at a custom action.

the whole point about a rem action for me is, it works and its cheap. That way I can afford a new scope, dies, bullets etc.

I also know how it feels not to trust a certain piece of equipment. Especially when flyers start showing up. So sometimes you do what you gotta do. Its your rig build it the way you want to.

Glass/pillar the stock,float the barrel.
Safely-Adjust the trigger group.
Reload & Chronograph loads.
Call your shots at distances of 1/2 to 1K.

When you out shoot the rifle-upgrade.

Trigger first, If the trigger isn't breaking clean consistantly it doesn't matter what you do do the rest of the gun. Just my .02
