Remington 700 short action and Remington 40x stock question.

I got a Remington 700 BDL short action that I want to use to build a 20-222 with a straight barrel contour. I plan to use it as a single shot. I've been looking at the Remington 40x stock and would like to use one in my build.

My question is: Will a Remington 700 short action fit in a 40x stock? Is it drop-in ready or are modifications required?

If it will, is there anything specific I should be looking for when I buy a 40x stock besides making sure the cut-out for the bolt handle matches the Rem. 700 bolt? As well as getting one that accommodates the straight contour already?

They're basically the same. 40x single shots were not cutout for magazine feed. In other words, a solid bottom. If the 40x was an over the course rifle in, say, 308, they had clip slots milled into the rear receiver bridge and there was a relief cut in the front receiver bridge for bullet clearance when loading the clip. Shouldn't have any trouble putting a 700 action in a 40x stock. You are no doubt aware that 40x actions were all short actions. All is a dangerous word here but I am unaware of any long action 40x's.

I have a 40x rimfire stock that has been modified for the remington box mag/floorplate. It can be changed if you have the time and knowhow.
Or you could also use it as a single shot and make a "trough"/follwer out of JB weld like the guy I bought it from did before he had it converted to a repeater when he used it for a centerfire action.
