It is easier to go by the barrel date code.

On the left side of the barrel, just in front of the recoil lug, there are tw letters, like "AE"... what are those letters, and the date of manufacture can be determined.

This will help you.. Going by your S prefix in the serial # I don't believe the rifle is that old. As Catshooter mentioned this link's info goes off the 2 digit lettered code on barrel..

There are many posts about this on this site and on Benchrest.com. Do a search and a lot of info will come up. The .204 must be a fairly new gun so you have it easy. Some of the older stuff can be confusing. If you email Remington they will give you the exact info (usually). I have done this on all mine. The exact place on Remington.com can be hard to find, but keep at it, and write down the navigation when you find it.

Remington can help you and give you an idea when it was made. I emailed them a few times about my rem700. I believe the s prefix has been in the past reserved for stainless receivers.

Remingtons manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. The following letters correspond to the months of the year, for example B=January, L= February and so on:

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

(*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

If my memory serves me right, the 204 Ruger cartridge was introduced to production bolt rifles in 2004. I know I bought my first 204 exactly one year after it hit the market and I'm pretty sure I bought it in 2005. Anyhow, the rifle in question can't be any older than 2004.
