Remington 700 SA stainless single shot

Anybody try one of these actions from Brownells yet?

I need another new build like a hole in the head, but I can't pass this up!

By the time a guy would have one in his hands (price of the action, Brownells fees, shipping) and paying to have it blue printed, he might as well have bought a single shot custom action. The custom action will hold its value. The Remington is a 'value' only if you can do the work yourself.

HEY GUYS!!! I posted an add in the classifieds. If you get me one of these actions, I'll trade for a complete win 70 LA. Details in my add, titled, great project win 70.

+1 What Shortgrass posted...........A Kelbly Atlas can be had for $850 ( +shipping) which includes a trigger hanger, alum. trigger guard,(worth $ 55....not pot metal), and side bolt release. You can have it built as a L or R bolt, cone or flat bolt, repeater or S/S, choice of 4 sizes of bolt faces, extra costs are pinned recoil lug - $35, ejector- $75. The Atlas is Stainless Steel.
The cost of truing the Remington will be lost on resale, and depending how bad the threads are you may end up contending with bastardized O/S bbl. threads......if you pursue an all-out blueprint.
Borden and others offers similar clones.

And I'd bet the bolt fits the receiver bore better as does the firing pin through its hole in the bolt face. Not to mention the M-16 extractor and the bolt release, the bolt body already being spiral fluted. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, resale value is an important consideration.

I picked up my action and it looks just like my friends 40X action but in SS.
The fit and finish is really good.

I sure haven't had any issues reselling a Remington action for what I have into it. However with that being said I don't put an extra $400-500 into them. If I was planning on that, then yeah I would buy a Predator action. But these are great actions for the price!!

Do they have that silly looking box on the side of action That you scan with a smart phone ??

Qualifier; I am not a competitive shooter. I just like being able to do things to the best of my ability and to the level that I feel I can afford. Working within those guidelines I may have a slightly different outlook on how to do things.

Having just gone through my first "build" using the Remington 700P .308 I purchased a couple years ago as the action donor and knowing what I know now I will never do it that way again. At this point I have basically bought this rifle twice not counting all the work I put into totally reworking the stock. The action still has the original sloppy fitting bolt which I had sent to Greg Tannel for his firing pin bushing work (which was great) a while back. It also was not timed properly so that had to be fixed also. I now have a rifle that fits me and shoots as good as my abilities allow. Unfortunately, I could have bought a used gun with all the good stuff, gotten it re-barreled and had a killer piece for not much more than I have invested in this Remington. My next rifle is going to be a 6br and it is going to be a used custom gun that I can do, or have done to, whatever is necessary to be able to use the Remage barrel system. Failing that I will buy a new Savage 6mm br and if it shoots well I will shoot it until it needs re-barreling and then buy a new after market barrel and do my own work. If it doesn't shoot well I will replace the barrel right off the bat. Either way I will be into a great shooting rifle (for me) for a minimum.

After the experience I have had with my original 700P I will say that I am pretty much done with Remington. I put around 850 rounds through the factory barrel and when I had JD Sims look at it through his Hawkeye it became very clear why the gun never shot well. The thing looked like forty miles of bad road.

So, like a few have said here if you are going to buy one of those actions for the basis of a new build I would think hard about it. When you add it all up going with a used or even new custom action is money better spent. I learned the hard way, but now I know. Just my novice two cents worth.

My son bought 2 rem SS action guns a Dicks at $500 ea. You get a cheap thow away stock and a resalable new barrel. That seems like a better buy than Bronells, plus no FFL fees at Dicks.
