Remington 700 replacement bolt

I am going to start a new build in a 223 on a factory Rem 700 SA. I am wanting to upgrade the bolt to a PTG one piece bolts. My question is, which diameter do i order? I want it to be a drop in fit. Should I measure my current bolt and then maybe add to clean up clearance? This will be a FTR rifle.

Talk to Kiff he will know but if possible measure the bore of the receiver as that is what tells you what you can get away with.

Both my 700 receivers I have with PT&G bolts have had the raceways bored to .705 and bolts are .702 diameter. They work well and there is enough clearance for what you are doing.

Best to have it bored by smith and new bolt fitted. I'm no gunsmith but my local smith is very helpful and he has inserts marked .700, .701 and .702 etc and he can slide them in raceway and see if they go all the way thru or tighten up at a certain spot. Then make recommendations from there. A custom action will be dimensionally perfect thru the raceway. Best to get receiver checked first and/or talk to Kiff about what you are wanting to do. Another words they are not a drop in fit if you are wanting top notch accuracy.

My opinion is to go with a 2 piece bolt so the handle can be timed optimally. A 1 piece bolt has to be made to fit all actions. The front and rear rings of the receiver are probably not on the same center line, so reaming would be preferred. I do not consider the PTG bolt and upgrade. Personally, I would just have the action trued, handle timed, and firing pin hole bushed.

Josh, why do you want to "Upgrade"?

I have pin gauges. .700-.705 is probably all you'll need if you don't want to have your raceway bored. They're fairly cheap. Go with 2 piece bolt as zfastmalibu advised. I was able to drop a .703 through entire action but a .704 was a heavy interference. I ordered a .702 and the factory bolt I had was a .699. Nice fit. This was on a previously trued rem722.

Or have it bored and bolt ordered to according size if your having the action trued.

You could also save the cash "upgrading" bolts and apply it to your action/bolt truing.

The only reason I went with a PTG bolt on mine was to get rid of the old 722 extractor. Otherwise if it was the current 700, I would have left it alone.

Make sure you have Primary Extraction. I would hate to buy an expensive bolt that does not function correctly. Some do, some don't.
