Remington 700 R-5

Hey everyone,

I've been shopping around for a new rifle, and while in a gun shop there was a used Remington 700 R-5 for $1200. This package included a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10x Mil-Dot scope, a 6-9 inch Harris bi-pod, and an H.S. Precision stock. The metal finish was stainless. What I'm wondering is if anyone can go into in depth detail about this model of rifle and I was wondering if anybody had any experience with it. It looked to be in pristine condition.

Thanks to all in advance.

I have one and its an unbelievable rifle for a pretty much box stock gun. Trigger can be adjusted to pretty good and the LR118 copy that I loaded up for it shoots 3/4MOA or better,I aint a great scope shooter as I am a sling shooter, but I can get it to do at least that, so I bet it will do better). For the $$, I dont think you can go around....they retail for around $1000, IF you can find one.

They can be bought new in the box for around $950. I seen one go the other day on another site NIB for $950 shipped....

Remington calls ths rifle a 700 Stainless Special with a 5-R mil spec barrel, 24". According to an article I read on,as I recall, Sniper Central) the barrel is a production or purchase overrun of barrels for their $2000+ military sniper rifle model,M24?). According to the article, approx. 4-700 of the 700SS' are made a year. So, therefore can be scarce at times. The stock is an H-S Prec. via remington just like they use on their varmit & sendero models.

I am just a farm shooter with intermediate bench skills, & ammeture wind doping ability. My 5-R will shoot a solid 1/2 MOA with me mistreating it. Would love to see what it would do with a pro behind it.

Yes, I am very happy wih mine!

Good luck, Dug

Was very happy with my Milspec as well. But, it does not have the same contoured barrel as the military M24. The military sniper rifle is more of a straight taper...from what I've been informed of on Sniper's Paradise. Having said this...It is a solid 1/2 inch rifle using very good ammo. This compares to a 3/4 inch plus rifle I had in a PSS of the same caliber. Plus the Milspec with the 5R rifling and 11.25 twist rate was better suited for heavier pills and was much cleaner after a session of shooting.

Good Luck,

Wayne
