Remington 700 Milspec

My LGS has a Remington 700 Milspec 308, with a HS Precision composite stock, with the barrel not centered in the stock. The gap at the end of the forearm on the right side is more than twice the gap on the left side.

Should it be possible to loosen the receiver screws and center the barrel, or does this indicate a problem with the stock itself? Thank you.

If it is bedded then who ever did the bedding job just messed up. if it is loose enough in the stock that it can be recentered than it will definetly need a proper bedding job as that is way to much clearence. If its factory send it back.

I don't think it is factory bedded, but rather has the HS aluminum chassis block in the fiberglass stock. The barrel is free floating to the receiver.

If the rifle is not bedded at all then it can be fixed by bedding. But to your first question then yes it would be a fault in the stock.

The combination of components is fine, the bedding sound awful. I suggest you or someone you trust rebed the action taking care to center and clear all conteact points. The bbl should be bedded 1-1.5" in front of the recoil lug in my experience.

It's not really a stock fault - many of the aluminum blocks are not perfectly centered. Since the barrel IS floating, it is NOT a functional flaw.... it is only cosmetic (looks like poop).

I have glass bedded nearly 90 of these stocks, and half of them were because of this. It is a very easy fix.

Wrap a collar of masking tape around the barrel, just behind the front of the stock.

Make the collar thick enough so that when set in the stock, it centers the barrel in the channel. Then glass the aluminum bedding block and drop the barreled action in the goop. The collar will assure that the action and barrel are perfectly centered.

Why do you say that? You were just informed that it is easy to correct, unless you just don't feel like messin with it. I can understand that.

A bedding job is not that difficult and will cure the poopyness.

It's really an H-S problem On what must have been a high dollar contract for them they just couldn't bring themselves to do it right. Rem said send it back and we'll fix it . Sure that's why I spent so much money for a rifle..... so I could send it back so they could do what they should have done in the first place. After that , I bought a lathe and a milling machine and went to school and if i don't do it myself then one of the fine custom smiths get the money.
And it's not a "just send it back". That is a huge hassel for me as the dealer I use is 100 miles away and it's extra paperwork for him. Whyn't they come to my house and pick it up. Just.
