Remington 700 MilSpec 308

Is there a way to estimate the freebore length based on the COL? I have a Remington 700 MilSpec 308 new unfired that seems to have a long throat. Using the Hornady overall length gauge and Sierra 175 Matchking bullet, the COL is 2.950". I tried it several time using two different bullets and all the measurements were within 0.010".

I am assuming you are talking about a Remington 5R milspec.

I get pretty much the same COL with mine using the same bullet (looking back where I recorded it last year when I did the measurements with the Hornady OAL gauge).

All I can say is that I found it to shoot just as well at 2.81 oal as any longer length I tried with 168 and 175 SMK's or 168, 178 and 180 Hornady or 180 Nosler ballistic tip. ???

I settled on just loading standard length and enjoy that they fit in the magazine unlike the longer length rounds I experimented with.

I can't say this is scientific in the least. But I can tell you from my past experiences with .308's (not limited to Remington) that some rifles like a "JUMP" and hate the jam. And that includes using either a 168gr or 175gr or even heavier bullet.

Diddo. 2.800 COAL and enjoy the ability for mag feeding.

Casting would be the easiest and accurate way to get all the measurements for your chamber. You could stick in a flat base bullet backward into a case that would allow you to hit the very beginning of the lands. Of course a precision turned plug would get you an even closer measurement.

My 700rem free bore was so long I just loaded to fit the mag.

Mine throated out at 2.945 as well.

Just try to figure out what works and used that. Jamming isn't going to happen with a stock Remmie.
