Remington 700 Jewell Trigger Help - Slam Fires

Gents,

I'm having some trouble with a trued up 700, and figured I'd post for some help.

I've got a 700 chambered in .260 that I'm wanting to use for LR F-Class. I've been using a TT Special "Black" trigger for the past few months, but really wanted something lighter than 1LB. I've used Jewell triggers in the past, so figured I'd go with them again.

It arrived this evening, and I can't get the thing to work reliably. I've set it up per the instructions ~5-6 times, and the best I can get it is to not slam fire if you VERY gingerly work the bolt.

I'm following these instructions:
http://www.accurateshooter.com/technical-articles/jewell-trigger-users-manual/

The trigger has the "B" spring installed now, but acted the same with the factory jewell installed spring.

I've used a Rifle Basix in this gun before that acted similarly; I just wrote that trigger off because I've seen reports elsewhere of RB triggers having issues.

Is there something else that could be causing this (maybe a worn out firing pin spring or assembly), or do I just suck with triggers?

My buddy’s has a bunch of jewells and he has them set very low, around 1-2oz. I can’t shoot them without slamfiring once in a while unless I’m very ginger with it. I went with Bix ‘n Andy and have mine at 1.5oz and you can’t slam fire it if you tried because of how they’re designed. Everyone has their favorites and know how to use them and Jewells are great but at least for me I won’t use them. That being said Bix triggers don’t do as well with extreme inclines/angles because of the design, it keeps them from cocking sometimes depending on how you have them set.

Like Dusty said, more seat engagement. Back the front screw out an eight of a turn at a time and re try until it won’t slam fire. Then play with the weight. You may or may not need to fine tune both for what your looking for.

Mike the Trigger tech diamond is a nice trigger also.. I would put it right there with the Bix&Andy and the Jewel br.I have all 3.

You need more sear angagement and more overtravel. A jewell can be reliable for any type slam fire over 3oz or so. You can get 2oz if youre more careful. A prs gun needs to be 8-10oz minimum and i like 4-6 for f class

I'll go jack with the overtravel. I'd done a ton of adjustment to the sear engagement, but it felt like once I hit a certain point of trying to add more engagement, it'd suddenly start slam firing again....the opposite of what you'd expect.

All 3 screws need to be adjusted in unison. They all relate to each other in reality

Well I walked away from it for a few hours and came back. I swapped in the lightest spring, added in more over-travel and sear engagement. It seems to be very light (don't have a pull gauge but would guess 3-4ozs), but it also passes all the safety checks. I'm putting clear nail-polish over the screws and never touching it again. :D

@BP1 - To your point, I'm going diamond next time. I really liked the TT I had in it; just wasn't light enough.

Thanks for the help gents!

Especially if you shoot competitively, you should plan on adjusting it annually. A thousand or so booms, and those little screws can vibrate a little and throw it out of adjustment again, and give you the same result. Ask me how I know, because I've made it my annual routine now.

I only have 1 gun (that's my story) but I have about a dozen jewel triggers set at 2 oz on my lone remington action and can't make any of them slam fire. --Jerry

Some of us cannot manage the tactile feedback of a 1 or 2 ounce trigger. Others can.

Life behind the gun has its compromises so make smart ones.

Ah, that word again-competitively.
I shoot competition and some times I shoot competitively.
Just an observation.

I meant more because of round count. But typically one slam fire in your record string and you wont be competitive in that match. Unless you're a VERY VERY lucky person lol. (Which I am not)

You know how that prayer goes......
As you're getting ready for that next shot, you touch one off .......
The prayer goes something like this: Please Lord let that one miss the target entirely or please let it be in the group or in the bull.
