Remington 700 in 243 load recommendation

I just did a conversion on a Remington 700 ADL in 243. It now has a Hogue over-molded aluminum pillar stock and Timney trigger set at 2 pounds. Nikon Pro Staff 5 scope with Leopold rings and bases. I'm working on trying to get a load put together for this light, stock 9.13" twist barrel. I'm going to be deer hunting with it and have started shooting 100 gr Federal factory loads to break the barrel in. So far, it doesn't like them, but did seem to like the 95 gr Federal Fusion. I'm looking at loading Hornady 95 gr SST with IMR-4064 and IMR-4350. I'll see which one it likes best.

My question is: Has anyone had any success with this bullet or do you have any recommendations on starting loads? If this barrel doesn't seem to work, I may have to re-barrel it. I hate to do that, but I'm not ready to give up yet....just getting started.

All help is appreciated.

hunt nut,,,,the .243 has performed well for over 50 years with 4350 and Sierra (or Berger)bullets,,(70-100 gr) ,,,these newfangeled (dual core-super penetrating-lead free)bullets dont kill any better and certainly dont have the accuracy potential,(I have tried them all !!!),,,get back to basics,,Roger

4831 SC with 95s work for me very well. Cant remember load data but 45 grains seems to stick. Been a while since I've ran some thru the loader. Have lots on hand.

Although many will tell you to use only 4350 or slower powders, don't discount using IMR 4064. I've had phenomenal results with H4350 and IMR 4064. For hunting, I use 85 gr SGK (classic load) and 100 gr SPT Pro Hunter with IMR 4064. However, I use H4350 when shooting the 95 gr SMK for hardcore target purposes. All my Rem 700 models prefer the bullets to be jumping a bit.

I load the Sierra 100 gr. Pro Hunter bullet in Lapua cases with WLR primers over IMR-4350 and IMR-4064 powder. Very accurate and effective on medium game.

I've had a couple of savage 243s over the years. Varget with 70gr SMKs was always a good combo. The one I have now shoots the 95gr smk's over H1000 really good.

Before totally dismissing a barrel with cavernous SAAMI dimensions factory cut maybe not all that well aligned with the bore chamber, and a factory cut crown, check that your ‘installed as delivered’ Hogue stock’s pillars’/inletting aren’t putting the barreled action into bind. Vibes’ lives’ matter …

And make sure the bolt handle doesnt touch the stock. For hunting loads I used a heavy dose of H4831 and the 95 and 100gr Nosler partitions. The partitions tolerate the good 243 velocities and usually give an exit wound. Our experience with the A-max is that it will cause a lot of meat loss and may not give good penetration. This comes from use of the 168gr in the 308W. The 243 is a small bullet so the added penetration with good expansion is a winning combination.
Dont know how I got the bold and cant make it go away.

You are correct there sir! Using imr 4064 and the 85g sgks I got some very tight groups!

the 95g SST is a tough bullet, and 4350 will be a great powder, start at 41.0g and work up, you will hit a node pretty quick. If you can find some R#26, you will get some amazing accuracy with speed out of this bullet, perhaps 150 fps more than IMR 4350.

My .243 shoots cloverleafs with 85gr and 45gr H4831. This load has shot well in several different .243s and is my go-to hunting load for deer.

I Agree with Roger. My Remington 700 243 that I use for deer hunting and the others that I've loaded for have had one thing in common for "deer hunting" accuracy and bullet performance..... they like the 85gr HPBT bullets and the 80gr Blitz bullets by Sierra. I've tried the 95gr SST's on deer twice. Yes, I harvested deer with them, but they were fussy to find accuracy and bloodshot the daylights out of em. So I just stick with the 85gr HPBT. And pay no attention to that crimping ring the SST's have you may have to set the bullets more shallow or deeper than that ring to find accuracy in your rifle.

The first shot out of a cold fouled bore is the one to make sure that it hits exactly where you want it to for hunting purposes. And it's a bonus if the next couple are close. My rifle likes the 4350, ww760, n550, and 4064 powders best. Most good reloading manuals will have loads for any or all of these. JME. WD

Yeah, I was wondering how you did that. Lol
