Remington 700 bolt question

NC/Br Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
I over heard on a video today that if the firing pin doesn't go straight everytime you will get different ignition results. The back of my bolt can wiggle side to side like the commentary suggested. They also where saying that when the trigger is released the firing pin is up then falls level into striking the primer I have a few Remington 700 short actions. What if anything can I get done to my bolts to correct this. Gunsmith wise?
thanks for any in put

The most reliable cure for decreasing the amount of clearance in the bolt in way of the cocking piece is to bush the rear of the bolt. Or to be exact, install a sleeve on the the bolt body in that spot.

That will help in one problem area. The firing pin spring in most Remington Bolts is all wadded up in there, causing it to rub the ID of the bolt. This is not a formula for consistant ignition.

Then there is the firing pin hole clearance. It is usually excessive, causing primer cratering even with medium loads.

All of this can be addressed by a competent gunsmith. There is, literally, an entire industry built around fixing what ails a Remington bolt.

By the time you have all of these issues addressed, you will have spent half the cost of a PTG bolt, which can be bought as a drop in, or a few thousandths oversize so the action can be reamed for a more precision fit.

Keep in mind. You have a production rifle. It is made to certain tolerances that will allow it to fire in various conditions, using any SAAMI spec ammunition found any where in the world. The accuracy is acceptable for the intended use of the Rifle out of the box.

The last couple of PTG bolts I had in the shop for fluting looked odd at first glance. Then it dawned on me, the bolt face counter bore was not even close to being concentric with the bolt body!! Holy hell, how many ways can you think of to make a mess of things! No thanks.

You can bush/sleeve the bolt if you wish but the POI of the firing pin is determined by the position of the bolt face end and the locking lugs as is the position of the rear of the bolt when the round is chambered.

Does anyone make an aftermarket 700 bolt that fits into a Remington short action receiver that is as say a Bat , for level and consistent ignition? I have bought a ptg bolt, and swapped 700 bolts from action to action, being mindful to set headspace on which ever gun I was loading for.
