remington 700 based Benchrest rifle

It isn't cheap. And it depends on how far you want to go on the blue print,
I'll just let you see whats involved and you can take it from there.
Let asume you already have an action.
The front threads are usually on a taper so they must be squared and the front receiver ring trued, The bolt race way usually need some work also.
After doing this you will find that the bolt is sloppy, You will need a replacement from dave kiff, along with a new bolt handle. the handle needs to be welded or brazed at the correct angle. A new firing pin should also be installed, The rear bridge on the remington usually need a new rear scew hole drilled and taped, The rear one is usually off center. You can make up for this with a set of rings that can be adjusted for windage,
You will also need a new trigger. Usually a loading ramp is inserted in the mag well, Its a lot of work but it can be done if you have the time.
If your paying for the work , IT would be easier to buy a good action from one of the suppliers here on the site. I think thats about it Gerry

Any ideas on where to start, would be .308 caliber, looking to build a nice benchrest rifle

Start with another action. It will cost as much or more to true a 700 as it would to use a WAY better action as a basis for a competitive BR rifle. And start reading www.benchrest.com

I have about $2,700 invested in a 700 action BR rifle. Completely trued up, good 2 oz trigger, bushed firing pin, Sako extractor, heavy recoil lug, H-R 3" stock, etc., etc. Leupold 40x on top, several barrels chambered in 6 PPC, 6BR and Dasher. It does not shoot as well as two custom action BR rifles I own that cost a lot less. Save your $$ until you can afford a good action, or start with a used BR rifle.

One thing seldom mentioned in this subject is the ease of operation of the custom actions versus the Remington. You'll never get a Rem. to be as smooth on the bench while in operation (i.e.-bolt throw upsets rig from target area) very hard to shoot consistently in competition with this condition. I've owned and still do own several trued Rem. (double bolt bushing, action face trued, bolt face trued, threads trued, super bedding jobs, Shehane stocks) and Stolle Pandas, Stiller Diamondback, lots of contact with Bat, Borden and the Rem. but there is no comparison in the operation. Go with a custom action! Mack

You need to define your definition of "Benchrest", but irregardless, a 308 doesn't really fit in anywhere under that category, except Hunter Class.

He might be thinking of F Class.
shooting off a rest prone or off the bench long range.
Most of those guys are using custom actions,
But please don't sell the 308 short. They can be highly competative.

Do you meam .308 as in a 308 Win.? Or do you mean .308 caliber as in 30BR (short range BR) or 300 Win Mag (long range BR)?

Also, for what it is worth...I have owned nothing but Remingtons....Felt that they were the best. Then I baught my first BAT. I now own 4 of them!!! The above post are right....you will spend almost as much to make a Remmy work and still only have a $400 dollar REM. The resale on custom actions is almost new price. But cycle the action a few times and the BAT would be a deal at twice the price. That probably can be said for most custom actions!!

Just my .02.

I'd recommend buying a good used competition rifle, be it for benchrest or other disciplines. There are always guys selling off old stuff, or getting out of the sport, or moving up to get the very best, top-of-the-line expensive gear. They frequently sell very good rifles & scopes, complete with dies & components for good prices. It's hard for a guy to get all the money out of a rifle that he dumped into having it built.

Take a good look through the classifieds here and on other forums, you'll find some decent bargains.

Best of luck to ya! Guy

xdshooter, box up that 700 remy and send it to jim hart in upstate ny tell him what u want and what youre going to do with it and fer 700 bucks and you have a great start! he has built me two 6brs on a remy actions and they are outstanding! and im having one built now on a rem action in 30 br. it aint about how big youre bank is, its how well you can shoot for what u can afford. i had these actions off old remys so thats what got used and they work great. :D
