Remington 700 5R milspec 308 24” Stock Change

Good Afternoon Members, I’ve been thinking of replacing stock on my 24” 5R 308. I want something easier on the hands when carrying around in the woods. The thick profile fore end and thick palm swell are ok when behind the rifle on bench or on ground, but not so much for comfort to carry.

What are some legit options? I don’t need adjustable cheek rests or a lot of bells and whistles.

I have a rail bolted to current HS Precision stock and run a GG&G bipod and a kydex adjustable cheek rest.

Any inputs/ideas/opinions would be great. Thank you

The challenge with what you want to do is that it will still be a heavy affair to carry that barreled action around in the woods. I've tried this with a similar setup and it wasn't a pleasant experience. If you want to carry a rifle for hunting, I recommend something with more of a sporter profiled barrel.

If this is your only option, look at AG Composites as a stock option.

I agree that it’s not the lightest rifle. I guess I’m falling out of love with the stock dimensions. Hard to get a comfortable purchase on them. Plan to get a lighter, sporter profile rifle when ever I can budget it….money so tight nowadays though.

If and when you decide about an option for a stock for your rifle, you will not be able to trim 2 lbs. off the weight.
I would lean towards the suggestion made by drop_point. However, I would steer you toward a Tikka T3X lite stainless in .308, 6.4 lbs.

Not mine, but perfect for your needs. I have three of them….

This is the contour I have in mind, wouldn’t be lighter but would grip better.

I’ve been eyeing the these, along with the savage 110 Lightweight Storm. Just dreaming though, didn’t hit the mega millions this time.

I bought a Remington in a really cheap plastic stock. The only good thing about it was that it was light. You could try one of those. Guys practically give them away. That would be a cheap way out.

Certainly would consider trying one on for size. Handling one for a short time at shop vs carrying one in and out the woods are two different things. I did worry about contact with the barrel with some pressure on the foreend when handling, but this could be a cheap way to see if the profile feels better. I’ll keep eye out.
