Remington 5r milspec 308

Does anyone here own a Remington 5r milspec 308. If yes do you like it. If you roll your own what do you use.

Personally I love the rifle and I roll my own. I use Sierra 175gr hpbt matchking with 43gr of varget.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it a lot, but the little that I have shot it, I put 10 rounds in .800' at 100yds. I know it can shoot better it's been to darn cold up here in Canada.

It would be nice to hear from my fellow Rem 5r milspec shooter.

Yes, I do like mine, so much that I have 3 of them. I normally just shoot LR118 copy that I load up, or some 150 or 155 sierras.

I have a 5R. I think the action and barrel are top notch. I do not like the stock and intend to replace it with a Masterclass stock.

Mine really likes 175 molly coated with Varget poweder.

hello i've got one and i like too shoot the 168gs MK's with 44-45gs of varget seated @ 2.800 oal..it was intended to shoot the 168's because of the twist it was cut just for that weight.hope things work out for you.

Load to 2.800' 175s 168s it doesn't matter. Varget is powder of choice 43.0 w/175 sierra's put 5 shot well under half inch and best 3 shot was .383 at 100yds. Long range accuracy was just as good. I liked my HS stock but had to buy a chieck riser to get to see through scope. Now one day I was shooting with some friends and had just ran around 60 shots without much of a break to let the barrel cool down. I was really impreased with the gun when the barrel was hot and shots kept on stack up. But I did notice that shot started going to the right about 3/4'. I let the barrel cool down and shot were back to normal.

I would like to ask all of you gentlemen to do me a favor.

Please take a bullet seating depth gauge and measure your rifles free bore. I would be willing bet all of you a free lunch that with a COL of 2.808 you are not touching the rifling.

It would be interesting to hear where your bullets would have to be seated and touch the rifling.

Hey Nat

I wish I could oblige you, I don't have the tools to do what your suggesting and gunsmiths are few and far between where I live.

I've read on some of the sites that I could probably load at a longer OAL. But until I can do what you suggest I'll keep the same OAL. But it would be nice to know.

I wish we had people like you where I live.

Thanks for the info.

Jonny not wishing to tell anyone what to do. I will make the recomendation to all serious shooters that a Bullet seating gauge is an invaluable tool. MidwayUSA, Cabelas, Sinclair, Creedmoor, and many others sell them. MSC sells a 5/16ths X 36 tapp for $12.21 With a drill and the tap you can make the case gauges your self.

Good Luck.

hello,to all.to answer Rustystuds question.yes we will all have alot of free bore but its been proven that the 5-r's like the bullets seated at around 2.800. or should i say that we have proved it.i know of around 8 of these rifels and they all like/love that spot.if i'm not mistaken the OAL is around 2.950 in these rifels, but i may be wrong because its been some time since i have checked.just hope that this helps.we all think that the rifels are a good example of what remington can do for us.but then again they all should shoot because the goverment spent alot of money to produce the rifeling for the gun just to shot the 168ers for our US snippers.

For the files of the FWIW category....

My Remington 308 26' varmint barrel's chamber takes a 2.995' OAL to make a square mark on the ogive with a 190 SMK.

I dont ever post, mainly just on here to read and learn all I can. But I have a 5r and Iam very happy with it. Just thought I would share what Information I have. I measured mine awile back with the hornady tool and mine is 2.335. My rifle also like's the 2.800 OAL, but I have mainly been shooting SMHPBT 135gr and it shoots in the 2s pretty consitant at 100 and 3s at 300. 45gr varget, br2 primers OAl 2.805 base to ogive is 2.215, speeds are slow around 2700 but dont matter to me when Iam watching the hole get bigger, I have run them all the way up to 2900 but they started opening up. Only tryed the 175s once, 42 varget and 43 varget 10 off lands didnt work for me, but I will try working on them some more when I get time.

Thanks to every one on here for the great information, Mike

Its nice to hear from you guys.

mp308 try 175gr bullets with 43 gr varget at 2.800 OAL. So far I group 5 rounds at .800 moa at 100yd and I know it can do better.
