Remington 40x Rimfire

I am new to the rimfire world somewhat. I have a 10/22 and that is all I have ever shot. I have the chance to buy a late 60s Remington 40x rimfire. How are they for accuracy. What should I pay for a rifle like that.

My 40X is very accurate. At 50yds it will shoot as well as my Anschutz 1913 super match. As far as price, condition is everything. I paid $800 for mine complete with match sights and condition was 98% plus.

You may also want to look at getting a CMP 22(various Man. used in the Civilian Marksmanship Program).

It will make your 10/22 look like crap for accuracy. If you like your 10/22 don't buy it, and give me the lead on where to get the 40X...

I have two 40X 22LR's and they are great guns. But remember that these guns we find for sale usually have had a BUNCH of rounds fired through them with questionable cleaning methods. This does not mean that they all are worn out, but some are.

I recommend getting a 40X, but I would suggest you shoot it first and have someone knowledgeable about them to look it over. It the gun is in good condition as far as the seller knows and is local, this should not be a problem.

Another gun you might consider that is much cheaper and BRAND NEW is the Kimber 82G that the Civilian Marksmanship Program is currently selling. They come in two grades: first, in new condition with a right of return for $600; and secondly, in new condition, labeled as "rusty" with no right of return for $400. If you go to the Rimfire Central Forum ( http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19 ) and the CMP forum ( http://forums.thecmp.org/forumdisplay.php?f=70 ) you can see pictures of these guns along with discussions about them. I have two "rusty's" and neither had any rust and they both shoot great. So far the referenced forums consensus seems to be to buy the "rusty" and that they are great buys for the money.

Should you consider the Kimber, here is a link to the CMP website listing them

CMP sells directly to the individual, so there are some forms to complete and send with payment, http://www.thecmp.org/formsindex.htm

Have shot many 40X rifles at my gun club, was looking at a 40x and a Win 52D to purchase after thinking hard and shooting both i purchased the 52D as it was a better shooter

Even if the 40x has a shot out barrel it can be restored with a new barrel. Yea, that is some money but most other guns a new barrel might not give you your money's worth. Excellent triggers are available. The factory trigger isn't that bad though. Stocks and other accessories are available like the 10/22. The downside is many require a gunsmith to install. The upside is it will shoot better than the 10/22.
