Remington 40X in .244

A little background, my neighbor and myself are both target shooter's & reloaders. He acquired this Remington 40x in the above mentioned .244 Remington chambering. We're trying to figure out if this rifle is Factory stock version or if it's been customized. We don't know anything about this rifles background as it was purchased from the family of an older friend of his during his estate sale after his passing.

This particular 40x has a stainless steel action with a 27" high polished stainless bull barrel marked .244REM (a small Horseheads logo then BO then L-S). Its serial number is 064***B this one is set up as a single shot.

The rifle is set in a nice Walnut stock with a very wide beavertail forend. It has a wide target trigger that is a very, very nice, guessing the release point is probably in the ounces, it's likely the best trigger I've ever pulled.

Up top is a fixed 40 power Hakko scope with a huge 56mm objective lens, it's mounted in a high set of Kelbly rings/dovetailed bases they appear to be aluminum and are in the white.

For ammunition we just used some 6mm reloads he had on hand for another rifle the load details follow below..

Winchester neck sized cases
IMR 4831 @ 48.5 grains
Nosler 70 grain Ballistic tip
Federal 210 primer

These loads shot right about 1/2" moa for 5 shots at 100 yards.

Any help much appreciated.

Looks like a factory stock. Factory barrels were 27 and 1/4 if memory serves me correctly. So depending onwhere you measured exactly, your in the ballpark. Show a good closeup of the barrel marking.

I think that is a chrome moly receiver that has been sanded and polished. I could be wrong and it is a later one, placed in an older stock.

You can google Remington's serial numbers chart and find a chart that will give you year of manufacture

Play with seating depth, nothing else, to see if you get better groups. Use windflags or at least some form of wind indicator.

If it is a factory barrel, it will have a rem stamped on the port side of the barrel.

The 'B' suffix would correspond to a 1981 manufacture date and the left side of the action looks to have been drilled and tapped for an iron sight set up. Back in 1981 I don't think Remington made many or for that matter any SS actions though I could be wrong. That would mean your action may have had the bluing removed somehow.

Approx 1970 40X. Barrel date code shows when it was manufactured except my 40X and 40XBR have no date codes on the barrel.
Here is the right side and left side marking on mine.
