Remington 40X Cleaning

Ok, I have the scope issues resolved the bolt stop is working freely now so the bolt stays in, everything looks good.

Today I got my Dewey bore guide and with the comb hight of the stock I need a cleaning rod that is 48" long. What do you guys do? I guess I could use the Dewey 44" rod and flex the handle over the butt stock, not what I really want to do.

Thanks,

John

Not sure what your relative dimensions are but what I did might work.
I locked the bore guide in position, then marked the long end so that it just cleared the rear of the action. I cut it off at that point. That reduced the angle at which the rod had to be positioned to make its run down the bore.

I have always had a bit of a bend in the cleaning rod to accomodate the high comb on my 40-X (a Freeland prone stock). Another option is to take the barrelled action out of the wood for cleaning, but that seems laborious...

Another option would be to install Warner (Tool Company) adjustable comb height hardware to your stock, so that the top section can be removed with ease to allow better access to the boreline for cleaning. That works beautifully on my palma rifle.

I don't put a cleaning rod in any of my rimfires and very very seldom use a brush. I bought a Remington cleaning kit that has cables so you can pull patches and brushes through the bore. The cable has a tough plastic coating so the cable doesn't touch the bore. I also am a believer that you shouldn't clean a rim fire very often. With this kit you don't have to worry about a bore guide for each rifle and you can put it in your range bag. Don
