Remington 11-87 loose part

I just purchased and reconditioned a Remington 11-87 12-ga. In the magazine tube (which I did not open up) there is a part that slides up and down the length when empty, as you point the muzzle either up or down.

Is this a common problem? Does it have a simple solution?

Have you shot it? Does it function correctly? A friend of mine bought one of those off of Gunbrokers. It would not shoot. I fooled around with it and quickly saw that whatever was wrong, I was in over my head.
Took it to Briley's to get it repaired. I've known their smith for 50 years. Long story short, the repairs would have cost more than the value of the gun.
I hope yours shots and functions properly.

Take the magazine cap off. Try to keep the spring from flying in your face then replace what is most likely a stick or pencil somebody cut down for a plug and buy a new plastic OEM part! Mossberg shotguns used to come factory with a small dowel rod to use as a plug. Prolly zero chance there is actually something seriously wrong with the shotgun. Best of luck sir!!
