Rem. XP100 LONGRANGE TARGET/HUNTING PISTOL IN 284 WINCHESTER/284 SHEHANE

Planning on building a REM. XP100 longrange target/hunting pistol with a 18-20inch barrel in a straight 284 or a 284 shehane and is wondering if there will be a noticeable velocity increase with 284 shehane over the straight 284 winchester in a short barrel. Your thoughts/help is appreciated.

What a build that will be---
I'l bet the straight .284 Winchester would have you spending less money in the long run... Any additional velocity would probably be lost in a 18-20 inch barrel...

I used to shoot pistol silhouette with an XP in 7mmBR. The recoil and muzzle flash will be--WOW. Why not try a smaller case first- and you can open the chamber later if you still want to. The 7-08 is a lot biger than the 7 BR but smaller than the 284. The 7 IMSA is I think the 250 savage case reworked. I have a rem M7 in 7-08- 18" barrel and it is a hand full to shoot with heavy loads. Good Luck

BIGMAC,

I don't think you would see much improvment over a standard 284. You may don't see much over a 7mm-08. When you shoot a rifle round in a 18" barrel, you need to use faster burning powder to burn up in the shorter barrel. This is why the BR cases work so well, they a full of fast burning. check with some other. You may just pushing moeavy bulletsre powder with no velocity gain.

The 284 would help with heavy bullet needed for longrange.

Mac, you might want to look at the varmint & hunting form and the tread "longest varmint kill". Where on the 2nd page member xphunter shows two long range XP pistols one a 6.5x284 center grip the other a rear grip chambered in 6x284. He's pictured with a p-dog kill in excess of 1500yds, in his profile he listed as a preacher so one would surely not question his integrity. You might wan't to contact him for his recommendation.
I just drop off a blueprinted XP action along with a PT&G coned bolt at Tumbleweed Custom Rifles, I'm having Mark Parr chamber a 20" HV in 22BR. I'm sure the 22BR will shoot as far as these old eyes can see. I've wanted a long heavy barreled XP for years and spent a lot of time drolling over some of the pistols that Preacher has posted over the years. Good luck with your build.
