Rem VS Savage

My friend is looking in to a new factory rifle to do some informal shooting to 1000 yd. I know it will be 308 win, the rifles I thuoght Savage F/Tr or Rem 700 5R . Any preference ??
I know there are many parts avilable for Rem and Savage is becoming more popular so aftermarket parts wonn't be a issue.
Thanks

For easy re-barreling sometime down the road go with the Savage. It is like an old gunsmith told me when I was asking his opinion on which barrel maker made the best barrel. He said just flip a coin. You can get a great barrel from them all and you can get a bad barrel from them all. You can get a good Remington or Savage or you can get a bad one. The Remington will have a higher resale value but it cost more to start with so flip a coin.

I love the easy barrel switching of the savages. I not only change the barrels, but I can do just about all of my own gunsmithing.

I can buy prefit barrels from other savage owners or order customs prefits. I love how they shoot. The Rem's shoot great too, but if you find one with a bad barrel, you can't as easily and inexpensively switch out the barrel and make it shoot.

I agree with you here, but I think in the future we may see your last statement do a flip-flop. Savage seems to be doing all the right things to attract more of the market. Bill

Back a few years there wern't any parts for Savage but now there are just like Rem . I shoot Rem but after reading here and other places Savage has made a name for thier rifles .
I was wondering the diff between 26'' tube VS 30'' is longer better ?

Longer is better if you are just bench shooting especially in some types of match shooting. I do not shoot competitively and I prefer the 26 over the 30. Just a matter of preference. I think Savage has finally decided it was time to listen to the customers
and build a rifle that incorporated at least some of the accuracy
components that some shooters will not do with out. I used to own several Remington rifles. I purchased one of the first 6.5 X 284 F class rifles that came out and now own two Savage rifles. I don't know if I will ever purchase another Remington. Bill

Ever since I bought my first Savage my Remington's are for sale. The only problem with that is Savage's reputation in the target world is growing so rapidly, the Remington's are getting harder to sell.Hooray for Savage.

Better for what?

All other things equal, the longer barrel will impart more velocity, and therefore more range. All other things equal, the shorter barrel is stiffer and has more accuracy potential.

Everything is a compromise.

I have owned both Rem and Savage and I like Savage better. The Rem's are nice but you end up spending money on extras that the Savages come standard with, ex. an adjustable trigger, better bolt handle etc. I also think the Savage Target action is stronger and better looking. If you go with the LRPV you also have the magazine option standard, however its currently not ofered in 308 but you could make one easy. That alone is a $250+ option for A Rem. As far as accuracy they are very similar but with the options on the Savages you can't go wrong.

"Ever since I bought my first Savage my Remington's are for sale." this is also a true statement for me as well. Prior to me owning a Accutrigger Savage you couldn't give me one. Now I own three. I have a Rem 300 RUM Sendero and a Rem ADL .270 I'd love to sell and purchase two new Savages. shoot Strait teele1

Rem has made some nice rifles, a friends's old 40x was the most accurate rifle I had tried-until I bought my Savage. The trigger was not bad on the 40x, but is even better on the Savage IMO, and he agrees. Another Rem I tried, tactical style, unsure of model), had a terrible trigger. With the Savage Accutrigger, you know you're getting a good trigger on pretty much every model. One that you can adjust to your preference with a factory-supplied tool. With the good accuracy they tend to have, I think that Savage has the edge out-of-the-box.

A comment on the 'longer is better?' question: the reason the Savage 12F models have 30" barrels is because they were made for prone competition. These events are held out to 1000 yards if the range is available. The longer barrel gives more velocity, which gives shorter time of flight, which gives the wind less time to blow the bullet off course from where you aimed it.

Well it seems to be clear on which one is more popular . I will let my friend know what seems to be the best choice Thanks! I hope the Rem people take a long look at some of the features that Savage is doing . I have been looking at some of the features and it's almost a custom for 1/2 price !

I have owned at least a half dozen Ruger Varmint rifles over the years and almost as many Remingtons along with a couple Winchesters thrown in here and there. I now own only Savage rifles, eight or 9 of them presently. There isn't one of them that won't shoot sub half MOA consistantly, and many of them will do much better than that. Changing barrels is not only easy but the price of a factory barrel will probably cost you lees than a trip to the gunsmith.
